What Marcus did not know as they walked toward the tow lot was that Claire Hadley was not in Pittsburgh for the conference she had told him about — the medical conference, the plausible and verifiable story she had given him with the fluency of someone accustomed to having a ready answer. She was in Pittsburgh because of a name in a file she had accessed three weeks ago in her capacity as a federal compliance investigator, a name connected to a financial network that ran through four companies and two foundations and ultimately pointed toward a building on Liberty Avenue that she had been photographing from the street that evening before her car had been towed with her equipment still in the trunk. The tow was not an accident. She had known, when she saw the truck, that it was not an accident, which was why she had been crying on those steps in a way that had nothing to do with the inconvenience of a missing wallet.
She had been trying to decide, in the hour she spent on those steps, whether to call her supervisor and tell him she had been made — which would end the investigation and protect her — or to say nothing and continue, which would protect the investigation and expose her to whatever came next from the people who had just sent a very clear message by taking her car. She had not made the decision when Marcus Webb knelt down beside her. She had not made it yet as they walked together through the Pittsburgh night. But something about the specific quality of his presence — steady, practical, neither alarmed nor performing calm — had given her, for the first time in a long hour, the feeling that she was not entirely alone in whatever this was going to be. She was not ready to examine why that mattered. She was, for now, simply walking. And the moon was full, and a stranger was dialing a number he had memorized for no reason except that he was the kind of man who memorized useful numbers, and sometimes the smallest and most accidental things are exactly what stands between a person and a decision they cannot take back.
