A few weeks ago, we hosted a Master class AI strategy and disruptive technology. What is disruptive technology, you may ask? It's an innovation or technology that significantly shifts or alters how consumers, businesses, or industries operate.

AI has undoubtedly taken the world by storm. If you're worried about how AI technology may potentially disrupt your industry (for better or worse), here are 3 tips for maintaining perspective in the face these huge changes:

—Diversify, and don’t try to time the market.
There isn’t a way to know how rapidly or slowly tech will change, and the best you can do is invest in a way that makes sense for your business or organization.

—Don't change who you are. Change how you think.
Look at Kodak as an example. The advent of digital photography shook up the traditional film camera industry. But Kodak decided to change with the times.

They are no longer a company that merely sells film and film cameras. With the adoption of digital photography and equipment, the company has shifted. They market themselves now as a company that helps capture and celebrate memories, in any form that takes place today and in the future.

—Don't abandon business fundamentals.
Technology may change and transition, but the tried and tested business principles endure. Regardless of what technology you adopt, always stay grounded in the fundamentals.

Dan brought up two potential points of risk for integrating AI into your strategy, like keeping up with the pace of development and ensuring you have a strong understanding of AI's capabilities. He also brought up some key points to ensure you can manage those risks.

In many beginning stages of the strategic planning process, knowing if having "business as usual," conversations or "strategic" conversations can be challenging.

Knowing if you're making the right strategic decisions is even harder.

Here are a few simple questions to ask yourself to determine if the conversations your team is having will help create the future. If you can answer "yes" to any question, jump to question 6!

-Does your idea create the future, or is it something new?
Strategic thinking makes teams act from the future.

-Does it leverage the megatrends in your industry?
Megatrends will impact your organization, so push your team to dive into the future to be proactive instead of reactive.

-Does it double down on what makes your organization successful?
The idea must center around why you win and how you could win to create a sustainable competitive advantage.

-Does it determine new frontiers for growth?
Can this path be sustained and lead to smart growth?

-Does it get your team moving where inaction is risky?
Will not acting on the issue harm your long-term sustainability? If so, it is strategic to move forward and address it.

-Is it ready to move forward?
Does your team have focus and commitment, and does your plan have scalability and sustainability? If so, then you're ready to move on with your idea.

To host an offsite retreat or not to host? That is the question that many executive teams may be asking themselves right now. Economic factors aside, is it even beneficial for your organization to host an offsite, especially if you're opting for a more agile quarterly refresh approach?

Here a few qualifying questions to determine if an offsite retreat is the right choice for you:
Do you have at least two days to dedicate to this retreat?
Do you need a big strategic reset or an opportunity to recast your plan?
Do you need dedicated time to address major shifts in your market?
Do you need some facetime with your team to get re-aligned?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, an offsite may be necessary for your team.

However, If you answered no, then consider setting up a virtual retreat that you can break up and spread across a few weeks, with each meeting lasting two hours at a time.
