The Reddy Kilowatt Hour

The Reddy Kilowatt Hour The Reddy Kilowatt Hour, presented Wed. 10 PM ET on Radio Fairfax. Enjoy our archived shows at https://reddykradio.buzzsprout.com.

Reddy J Kilowatt is your rock and roll servant, featuring alt-rock, progressive rock, soul, occasional punk rock, deep tracks, forgotten classics, and brand new, angst-ridden favorites. Inspired by the great FM stations and DJs of the 70s and 80s who played whatever they felt like, along with the old AM radio energy of the late 60s - early 70s. There's still great new music out there and we play i

t in context with the whole history of both rock and roll. You can receive us Wednesday nights at 10 pm Eastern on the TuneIn App ("Radio Fairfax"), on the Radiofairfax.org player, and in Northern Virginia on Fairfax County cable TV (Cox/Fios Channel 37, Comcast Reston Channel 27). We also are presented on WBRS Belgium (http://wbrs.online) every Saturday at 10 pm CET, 4 pm Eastern! Updated every weekend! Also available on iHeart, Apple, and Google Podcasts, and now on Amazon Music!

Great evening at the Embassy of Sweden tonight with The Mommyheads and Per Sunding of Swedish Band Eggstone. Great music and the most polite concert venue for a rock show I’ve seen maybe ever. In lieu of the rooftop concert (Tropical Storm Ophelia has taken a while to dry out), the concert was instead held in the Nobel Hall with neatly arranged chairs. Enjoyed chatting with Adam Elk and briefly with Per Sunding.

Reddy pontificates: Rolling Stone magazine ceased to be relevant to me by the late 80s. The musical monoculture had changed years earlier. They couldn’t keep up with the changes in the music world, were months and years behind other media in recognizing the impact of women and Black artists who emerged beyond the 60s era, and the whole streaming and download culture befuddled them. I love the classic 70s artists as much as anybody, but it’s the “non-classic” musicians that move the needle. You will never see the Dead Kennedys in the Rock Hall, nor the Breeders, let alone Warren Zevon or Jimmy Buffett or Alan Parsons or Little Feat, but I’d argue they are more relevant than some who have made it in. That Jann couldn’t find room for Stevie Wonder or Christie Hynde or Tina Turner in his book is strange. Let’s also not forget that RS, in a desperate bid to be relevant, published a sensationalalistic and badly-researched article about s*xual assault at UVA that not only had to be retracted, but would empower a lot of right-wing manosphere types, including certain politicians who will remain unnamed. I think indirectly, despite the movement, all this has helped cause treatment of women by our legal system to slide backwards. I am amazed RS has survived this long.

The once powerful Rolling Stone publisher made insensitive remarks in an interview with the New York Times to promote his new book, The Masters

Get well Boss. Springsteen has postponed all the rest of his September shows. Including the one we were seeing Saturday in Baltimore. Apparently some kind of chronic ulcer that caused the doctors to tell him not to perform. We’ve been losing a lot of great musicians this year, one can hardly blame anyone for trying to look after themselves, especially since Bruce is almost 74. 😕😔🙂. Now back to the show….

The latest and greatest...now being streamed on Buzzsprout and the Fabulous Pod Apps. The latest from Peter Gabriel, Wilco, Vacations and LOBSTERBOMB, some West Virginia sounds from Mink's Miracle Medicine, hail to the 00s with The Strokes, Compulsive Gamblers (with our title track this week), visit the 90s with Pearl Jam and Dog's Eye View, relive the 80s with Talking Heads and some U2 (with a rare lead vocal by The Edge), and sharply divergent 70s experiences with Jackson Browne and XTC.

You can stream this and our other archived shows on reddykradio.buzzsprout.com (and linked below), and it's also available by subscribing to "The Reddy Kilowatt Hour" on Apple, iHeart, Google, TuneIn and Amazon Music podcasts.

In Northern Virginia, you can also tune to Channel 37 on Cox and Fios, and Channel 27 on Comcast in Reston and the hipper parts of Arlington, Prince William and other boroughs of our green and fair metropolis.

Now, my Jimmy Buffett tribute. We will be featuring Jimmy on an upcoming show. We've played him I think once in our almost three years (it was Episode #18, https://www.buzzsprout.com/1597831/8476893-episode-18-cinco-de-mayo-5-5-21.mp3?download=true, our only "Cinco De Mayo" episode, very early in our show's history). But he created a unique music genre (which he called "Gulf and Western"), succeeded in bringing the ocean and laid-back pirate life to landlocked millions in their Hawaiian shirts and parrot hats (I could do without the beer-gut guys in the grass skirts though), and found different ways to cleverly leverage his moderate musical success into business success, which in turn allowed him to perform where, what and when he wanted and support his family (and then some), support conservation and ecological causes, write a couple cool books, and author a Broadway musical. I will also admit to never having a bad time at his Margaritaville restaurants, which always had decent food and drink, great service, and in his Destin Florida location, absolutely killer views of the sunset. He admired his "Uncle Warren" Buffett and Warren admired his "Cousin Jimmy" Buffett, even through DNA tests proved no geneological connections. Rest in peace Jimmy. You always looked and seemed happy and everything you touched made someone happy too.

Have a safe long weekend and catch y'all soon!

06/10/2023

On our latest archive, we make a tentative but perceptible move outside the frequent dead-end of irony, sarcasm, angst and ennui that populates most modern music. If there was anything Tina Turner (RIP) did in her close to 50-year career, it was to be the unapologetic master of her domain (sorry, Seinfeld). To the extent that a frantic run across a busy freeway in Dallas in 1976 to escape a resentful and abusive husband and bandleader became her turning point, and in the 1980s no female artist had ever risen to the level Tina did (not even people like Madonna), especially as a live performer, and commanded the respect of so many other artists. And then by the 2000s, she retired on her own terms, finding the love that eluded her earlier in life and enjoying what she had accomplished. While one can argue about the pop orientation of a lot of Tina's 80s and 90s hits, her live performances (even of those pop hits) reminded everyone of what an artist could do when they showed up night after night and left it all on stage. When Mick Jagger, arguably the most charismatic performer in rock and roll, credits Tina with the development of his own stage persona as far back as the 60s, that's some kind of influence.

So this week we do three Tina tracks along with a variety of other stuff which is a bit of a departure for us, at least in recent months. We skip our normal opening and enter into the famous Ike & Tina introduction and rendition of CCR's "Proud Mary" in 1971, a version that John Fogerty would love and remain proud of to this day. We follow nice 'n' rough with a more modernistic interpretation of the blues from U2, who on their 1988 album Rattle and Hum found themselves immersed in American culture. Their blues-ish number "When Love Comes to Town" is elevated by the guitar and vocals of BB King, who would make this song one of his own standards in his remaining years. Our set ends with a new one from The Great Leslie, "Loving and Leaving", inspired by Arctic Monkeys and many other bands they said their parents listened to. Soaring vocals and a vintage 2000s Brit rock arrangement make this song a great listen.

Set two has both a countryish and very old school feel for somewhat obvious reasons. Dogwood Tales out of Harrisonburg VA starts of with a laconic song ironically called "Shaky", which features more than a little Flying Burrito Brothers and Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan in their sound. The song fades into a lilting "beach country" vibe courtesy of Nashville-based, California-bred singer Marie Wise-Hawkins, with "Somewhere in Mexico", which has a definite Jimmy Buffett feel. I recently got to see her at her daily gig in Nashville, performing at the famous "Tootsie's Orchid Lounge", where she exposes a harder edge with her live performances. That Nashville weekend was revelatory in many ways, and if it weren't for Tina, this might have become a more Nashvillian show. Marie's song fades into a 1960 tune that was Anna Mae Bullock's first hit branded as "Tina Turner" (Ike had the name trademarked so if Anna Mae left the band, another woman could step in as "Tina".). "A Fool in Love" features Tina's nakedly raw vocal along with the more melodic Ikettes.

Our middle set opens with JAN3T, a Jersey City performer reminiscent of Prince but with far more vocal range, with "1-800-CUL-ATER". JAN3T's self-titled record will be out July 21. The modern punksters Private Function from Melbourne, Australia follow with "Don't Wanna Go Out on the Weekend", which starts with a power-pop feel and adds layers of chaos and speeds up the tempo until it gloriously crashes to a sudden stop. Picking up in the same key of A, the Raspberries proceed forward with their gorgeous pop-rock hit, "Go All the Way", full of classical melodies and gorgeous Eric Carmen vocals and band harmonies. The Cleveland band recorded their album at Abbey Road in London, and managed to evoke Beatles, Free, Badfinger, the Who and T-Rex all in this one song. And on top of all this, BBC banned it because it glorified teenage s*x. Talk about a song that had it all.

We go more laconic, with Habe (which I now know rhymes with Abe), a solo artist from NYC performing "Half Heard Melody", a song that throws us back to some of the great R&B and soul hits of the 70s, with echoey vocals and mellotron-sounding keyboards. We go a little more raw with the next tuine, courtesy of 2006-vintage Bruce Springsteen, who was embarking on a tour with what I jokingly refer to as his jug band, actually an accomplished folk-blues band with horns and slide guitar that performed Pete Seeger standards as well as modernized versions of early 20th Century songs. This one is a big slap at Bush 43 in the wake of the massive physical and personal destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. "How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Hard Times and Live" was originally written and recorded by Blind Alfred Reed in 1929, with a newer, electrified version recorded in 1970 by Ry Cooder, and then Springsteen added two of his own verses that made it more topical. This has always been one of my favorite non-E Street Springsteen tunes. Earlier in the '00s, the Stereophonics became known for a song placed in the closing credits of the movie Crash, "Maybe Tomorrow". A positive song amongst dark and difficult times, punctuated by 70s-ish vocals and an amazing Mellotron and wah-wah guitar over an insistent shuffle.

We end this with a 7+ minute song where Tina Turner is backed by both members of Dire Straits as well as guitarist Jeff Beck and a series of lite-jazz saxophones. This song, "Private Dancer", became the title track of her breakthrough solo album (the first to not be done under the thumb of Ike Turner). Mark Knopfler wrote the song for his album Love Over Gold about a nightclub pr******te but thought it needed to be presented from a female perspective. Tina took what what could have been a strange and awkward lyric and Steely Dannish-arrangement, and as she always did, personalized and humanized it, by both understating her vocals during the verses and exploding in the choruses. That takes us to the end of this week's archived show. Next week, cue the irony, sarcasm, angst, and ennui... or maybe not? I will definitely play another Dire Straits tune from Love Over Gold in the coming weeks. There's a there there, to counter Joan Didion's famous quote about LA.

OK, I was long-winded this week. But you can stream this show on reddykradio.buzzsprout.com (and linked below), and it's also available on Apple, iHeart, Google and Amazon Music podcasts and guess what - we are back on TuneIn podcasts!! Suggestion: at least with my podcaster (BeyondPod), the show notes with the playlist don't show up in the cast info. It there's an easy way for you to add that, it would be a nice feature.
