Washington West Film Festival

Washington West Film Festival Save The Date. Oct 24–28, 2019. Donate Today! Your donation will help build this very special festival that gives back 100% of it's box office each year!
Anchored in the Washington, DC metropolitan area’s sophisticated technology and wine region, the Washington West Film Festival invites filmmakers, film lovers, industry professionals, and the media alike to experience a breathtaking autumn in and around one of the most influential places on earth. From historic Pennsylvania Avenue to the idyllic vineyards of Northern Virginia, Washington West is set to screen the very best films that filmmakers have to offer. “Story can change the world” is Washington West’s mantra. Selected films - with their diverse genres and themes - are the medium from which our audiences are invited to enter the world of story themselves. This is accomplished when 100% of Washington West’s box office net proceeds are given each year to projects committed to alleviating hunger, disease, displacement, or poor education around the world.

Washington West International Film Festival

ATTENTION FILMMAKERS!

Here are 4 reasons why you should submit your film to the Washington West Film Festival:

1️⃣: We’ll actually watch your film. From start to finish. At least 3 times. Believe it or not, many film festivals do not screen their submissions. We uncompromisingly believe every filmmaker deserves a fair chance to share their story.

2️⃣: Our screening team is anything but homogenous. It is diverse in age, gender, race, socio-economic background, ideology, etc. to ensure your film is carefully considered by screeners who look and sound like you.

3️⃣: We will provide feedback of your film upon request, regardless of selection status. It is important to us that filmmakers whose work is not accepted, still leave having benefitted from engaging with our film festival.

4️⃣: Most importantly, submitting your film allows us to raise funds for communities in need. We gave over $30,000 for foster children arts education in addition to tens of thousands more to other projects. You can easily be a part of this effort!

It is our absolute, sincerest belief that story can change the world and that important stories like yours need to be shared.

Submit by May 31 before submission fees increase. Film submissions will be accepted until June 30.

Use the discount “Happy2019” for a 19% discount on FilmFreeway. You can learn more about us on our website.

Mott Haven

Looking for something to do tonight? Skip out on Netflix and check out our 2018 alum film Mott Haven, the award-winning short documentary directed by Kyle Morrison.

It tells the story of a social worker named JC who creates a music studio in an old storage space located in Mott Haven Community High School—considered a “last chance” school. The students enjoy the use of the studio where they can open up about their lives by bonding through their love of hip-hop.

Mott Haven, is a neighborhood in the South Bronx that has long been viewed by other New Yorkers as a wasteland. As the neighborhood begins to redevelop, gentrification now forces the community to figure out what it truly represents.

When a student is murdered in front of the school, JC holds an after-school performance in their honor to help the community deal with their collective grief. The other students are battling their own obstacles to graduate high school in a district where less than half of kids there live below the poverty line.

Today we celebrated 3 years of partnership with Kids In The Spotlight with celebrity ambassador Ty Burrell of Modern Family.

Since 2016, the team at Washington West has raised $33,925.40 for this inspirational organization. This was made possible by all our attendees who purchased tickets, filmmakers who made amazing films, sponsors who believed in our vision, volunteers who worked endlessly, and so many more.

This is exactly why coming to a Washington West screening is so important to us. Not only do you experience compelling storytelling, but you simultaneously pay it forward to communities like KITS through all ticket purchases.

Thank you to everyone who helped us reach this momentous feat!! Thank you KITS for paving the way for future storytellers whose voices need to be heard. You are so deserving of this. #storycanchangetheworld

The people have voted! Congratulations to Headway short film for winning our Audience Choice Award for short films.

The film was voted on by audience members who selected it from their ballots. Headway is a 22 minute short that tells the story of an eleven-year-old boy who deals with the singularities of autism and a newly retired late-thirties MMA fighter. It was screened as part of this year's Family Ties showcase.

Camila Rizzo, Bruna Cabral and Ligia Osorio, not only did you bring a brilliantly crafted story to this year's festival, your shining faces have been a welcome addition to our community and the story.

Good morning Washington West! If you have plans today, cancel them! You're going to want to head over to Bowtie Cinemas At Reston Town Center for a final day of spectacular films, opportunities to connect with award-winning filmmakers, and the chance to be part of this year's story.

At 1:00pm, don't miss jury award winning feature film, Nos Llaman Guerreras. In a country torn apart by political and economic upheaval, a team of young women finds refuge in a sport that rises above their personal poverty and gendered social status.

At 1:30pm you can catch 55 Steps Movie - based on the inspiring true story of the unlikely relationship between an outrageous and wickedly smart psychiatric patient and her workaholic patients' rights attorney.

If musicals are your thing, don't miss our screening of Saints Rest at 2:00 pm. A musical drama set in small-town Iowa, Saints Rest tells the story of two estranged sisters who, over the course of one summer, form a connection through their shared love of music as they grieve the recent death of their mother.

At 2:30pm, filmmaker (محمد بايزيد) Muhammad Bayazid will be hosting a workshop on the Art of Visual Storytelling.

And last, but in no way shape or form least, Robert Duvall will be here for our closing night screening, Widows and a Q&A afterwards.

This promises to be another fantastic day. Don't miss out!
