Washington West Film Festival

Washington West Film Festival Join us Oct 22–26, 2020 for the 10th annual Washington West Film Festival. Even if you can't make it, donate today! Your donation will help build this very special festival that gives back 100% of it's box office each year!
Anchored in the Washington, DC metropolitan area’s sophisticated technology and wine region, the Washington West Film Festival invites filmmakers, film lovers, industry professionals, and the media alike to experience a breathtaking autumn in and around one of the most influential places on earth. From historic Pennsylvania Avenue to the idyllic vineyards of Northern Virginia, Washington West is set to screen the very best films that filmmakers have to offer. “Story can change the world” is Washington West’s mantra. Selected films - with their diverse genres and themes - are the medium from which our audiences are invited to enter the world of story themselves. This is accomplished when 100% of Washington West’s box office net proceeds are given each year to projects committed to alleviating hunger, disease, displacement, or poor education around the world.

If you're newer to the Kids In The Spotlight family,
you may not know about our friends at the Washington West Film Festival.

They have been HUGE supporters of KITS & our shared belief in the power of storytelling. They also have been donating their box office sales to KITS for the past 4 years as well as giving some of our youth the opportunity to fly across the country to attend and share about KITS' impact.

So, right now, we have a chance to (in a very small way) return the favor!

USA Today has already distinguished the Washington West Film Festival as one of the top 20 film festivals in North America!

But for the TOP 10 BEST, they're letting voters weigh in!

The Oscars are upon us! For our weekly Friday film recommendation this week, we're gonna push for our 2019 film, Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (if you're a girl) #NowOnHulu!

It may be a short film, but the girls in this documentary have perseverance, dedication, bravery, in HUGE quantities. After you watch the film, you'll want to brush the dust off of your old skateboard and take a ride.

Best of luck to Carol Dysinger and the rest of the film team at The Academy! We're cheering you on from west of Washington!

"Once you actually embody Kobe as a little 6-year-old boy in his bedroom, you know everybody is just like, 'Oh man, that's a cute little guy, I want him to succeed.' You are suddenly rooting for this person and you realize...nothing is a guarantee. Nothing is a given at 6-years-old. You don't know what's going to happen, and at a certain point you realize, wow, what he was imagining ACTUALLY HAPPENED. There's just something really wonderful believing the impossible is possible. I love characters that believe the impossible is possible." - Glen Keane

Our team had the once in a lifetime opportunity to see Kobe Bryant in a conversation with the renowned animator, Glen Keane, at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival. The two were discussing the film they collaborated on together, Dear Basketball, which went on to win the Academy Award for Best Short Film (Animated).

Here is a clip from the talk: https://youtu.be/wcX7eQaGc90

You'll be sorely missed Kobe. Thank you for showing us that the impossible is possible.

🔦 DIRECTOR SPOTLIGHT: Melissa Davey is a documentary filmmaker who lives in Valley Forge, PA. She is a wife, mother, and grandmother to three grandsons. The Beyond Sixty Project is her directorial debut.

After a decades-long career in senior management with a large national corporation, Melissa hit the magic age of 65, a time when most people press the pause button and weigh their options. With no interest in retirement, Melissa began an inventory of things she had always wanted to try "before it was too late." One dream kept jumping to the forefront: to become a filmmaker.

A lover of film and storytelling, Melissa knew immediately she would create a documentary about women over the age of sixty, showcasing their resilience and continued relevance through their personal stories. Knowing all too well the invisibility factor that occurs as women age, Melissa hopes her film will inspire others and shed a light on the remarkable achievements and ongoing pursuits of everyday women beyond the age of sixty.

Your chance to see this great film and meet this inspiring filmmaker has come! Beyond Sixty Project will be screening on Sunday Bow Tie Cinemas in Reston Town Center @ 2pm!

Don't forget! 100% of ticket sales from this screening will be donated to Kids in the Spotlight, Inc.!
