In 2021, Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, bought a beach house in Malibu, designed by the master architect , for $57.3 million. No living architect seems more likely to make a wealthy buyer feel that he’s buying not just a fine home but the work of a major modern artist. An Ando house requires expensive and exacting construction; it has a controlled, sober beauty that photographs well and that communicates contemporary, if not avant-garde, taste. And it is rare. Ye admired Ando and wanted an Ando, but he didn’t love this Ando. His intention, always, was to reimagine it.
That September, Ye hired a handyman, Tony Saxon, to work on the house without permits, telling Saxon that he wanted no kitchen, bathrooms, A.C., windows, light fixtures, or heating. By the end of October, demolition was largely complete. By the start of November, no construction had begun on the ramps, or slides, that had always been a part of Ye’s vision for the house, and Saxon left the project. Work continued for a while—Ye persuaded someone to remove the home’s big ocean-facing windows—but then everything stopped. In January, 2024, the house was listed for $53 million. In mid-April, Ye reduced the price to $39 million. It’s hard “to think of another esteemed house that’s been left exposed to the elements, and to the public’s gaze, after being jackhammered halfway to ruins,” Ian Parker writes.
