From Haiti to Columbus: House of Sisterhood Is Turning Immigrant Experience Into Community Power

Founded by 13 women, the Columbus nonprofit is helping women navigate language barriers, healthcare, employment, education, immigration concerns and leadership while building a wider culture of sisterhood and service.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — For many immigrant women, arriving in the United States is only the beginning.

The more difficult part often comes afterward.

A newcomer may have to learn how to find work, communicate with a doctor, understand government agencies, complete official forms, open a bank account, obtain transportation, enroll in school, help children adjust and advocate for herself in a language she does not yet fully understand.

She may have been a professional in her home country but suddenly find herself rebuilding from the beginning.

She may know exactly what she needs to say but have to depend on someone else to say it for her.

For three Haitian women in Columbus, those challenges are not theoretical.

Reynoldsburg Community Rallies to Support Families After Devastating Flood

REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio — Residents and volunteers came together Sunday morning to support families in Reynoldsburg’s Briarcliff community and surrounding neighborhoods following severe flooding that caused significant damage on August 20.

For many families, the flood brought heartbreaking losses. Water entered homes and damaged furniture, household items, personal belongings and other valuables. In the days following the flooding, residents have been faced with the difficult task of removing damaged possessions and beginning the cleanup and recovery process.

The City of Reynoldsburg’s 2026 Upper Blacklick Creek study found that parts of Briarcliff’s storm-sewer system can surcharge and flood even during relatively frequent storms. The city is also studying floodplain widening along Blacklick Creek and potential property acquisitions as a long-term solution.

And this is very recent: on August 20, 2026, flooding was photographed in residents’ yards in the Briarcliff neighborhood.
