Hello Porchers!
Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, I hope you are staying cool and please make sure you are hydrating. If you are outside, say you’re tending to the garden, make sure you are taking frequent breaks and only working during the cool parts of the day.
I don’t do well in the heat – I tend to wilt quickly. But business most go on, so let’s get up on the world’s largest mythological metamorphical porch where it’s always in the shade in the summer and warm in the winter and relax with three hours of great music.
Saturday looks like it’s going to be a fun day with a lot of new music scheduled for the first hour. Since I receive a lot of Americana from publicists, I like to narrow it down to what I think is the best music to share with you.
We’ve got great music from Hilary Hawke, the tandem of Mike Reid and Joe Henry, The Wildmans, Patty Griffin, Imogen Clark and others. It’s going to be a fast hour with a lot of fun.
In the second hour we’ve got the Celtic Connection with music from the Screaming Orphans, Christy Moore, and Karan Casey. You’ll feel sufficiently Irish after this set.
Then comes music from Arlo Guthrie, Nina Simone, and Chuck Berry.
For the third hour, it’s time for Jazz and then anything goes, with new blues from All Things Swamp, Piper & The Hard Times, and a live track from Debbie Bond. Then there’s music from Moon Martin and Neil Young as well as tracks from Mott The Hoople and David Bowie.
That’s Saturday! Now, on to Sunday.
We’ve got a few more new releases from Asleep At The Wheel, Hilary Hawke, and Alison Krauss and Union Station. Then there’s more new to me music, some from my dear friend June (Giving rise to our “June In July” segments) and some that I purchased from one of my favorite shops.
There’s music from The B-52’s, Aretha Franklin with Duane Allman, Eric Clapton with Dhani Harrison, Emma Wilson, Eilen Jewel and more.
That’s all in the first hour.
The second hour kicks off with the Celtic Connection with The Bothy Band, Capercaillie, and The Corrs.
The in two June In July segments, there’s music from Jimmy Buffett and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Then in the third hour, there’s Jazz from Jamie Shew, Juan Carlos Quintero, and Nancy Reed with Billy Test. Then there is music from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and The Rolling Stones.
We can’t leave out the bluegrass that showcases Vassar Clements, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and David Grisman.
There’s a lot to enjoy this weekend. Great music on Saturday as well as Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can find John’s Porch on VPM-Music at 93.1 or 107.3 FM in the Richmond area, or at vpm.org. Catching it live is always the most fun, but if you miss it, you can catch up at our Music Archive page where we post recent shows from the locally produced music programs.
