Hello Porchers!

Wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, I hope you are staying cool and please make sure you are hydrating. If you are outside, say you’re tending to the garden, make sure you are taking frequent breaks and only working during the cool parts of the day.

I don’t do well in the heat – I tend to wilt quickly. But business most go on, so let’s get up on the world’s largest mythological metamorphical porch where it’s always in the shade in the summer and warm in the winter and relax with three hours of great music.

Saturday looks like it’s going to be a fun day with a lot of new music scheduled for the first hour. Since I receive a lot of Americana from publicists, I like to narrow it down to what I think is the best music to share with you.

We’ve got great music from Hilary Hawke, the tandem of Mike Reid and Joe Henry, The Wildmans, Patty Griffin, Imogen Clark and others. It’s going to be a fast hour with a lot of fun.

In the second hour we’ve got the Celtic Connection with music from the Screaming Orphans, Christy Moore, and Karan Casey. You’ll feel sufficiently Irish after this set.

Then comes music from Arlo Guthrie, Nina Simone, and Chuck Berry.

For the third hour, it’s time for Jazz and then anything goes, with new blues from All Things Swamp, Piper & The Hard Times, and a live track from Debbie Bond. Then there’s music from Moon Martin and Neil Young as well as tracks from Mott The Hoople and David Bowie.

That’s Saturday! Now, on to Sunday.

We’ve got a few more new releases from Asleep At The Wheel, Hilary Hawke, and Alison Krauss and Union Station. Then there’s more new to me music, some from my dear friend June (Giving rise to our “June In July” segments) and some that I purchased from one of my favorite shops.

There’s music from The B-52’s, Aretha Franklin with Duane Allman, Eric Clapton with Dhani Harrison, Emma Wilson, Eilen Jewel and more.

That’s all in the first hour.

The second hour kicks off with the Celtic Connection with The Bothy Band, Capercaillie, and The Corrs.

The in two June In July segments, there’s music from Jimmy Buffett and The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band as well as Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Then in the third hour, there’s Jazz from Jamie Shew, Juan Carlos Quintero, and Nancy Reed with Billy Test. Then there is music from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and The Rolling Stones.

We can’t leave out the bluegrass that showcases Vassar Clements, the Carolina Chocolate Drops, and David Grisman.

There’s a lot to enjoy this weekend. Great music on Saturday as well as Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can find John’s Porch on VPM-Music at 93.1 or 107.3 FM in the Richmond area, or at vpm.org. Catching it live is always the most fun, but if you miss it, you can catch up at our Music Archive page where we post recent shows from the locally produced music programs.

Hello Porchers!

Well, it’s been a couple of busy weeks here on the Porch and I apologize for not posting any blogs for a while. Hopefully you still found your way to our regular Saturday and Sunday get togethers for a little hootenanny time. I hope those of you in the Richmond area have dodged the rain and stayed out of the heat.

I’ve been listening to a lot of CDs that a couple of friends, Scott and June, have donated to me to play on the show. I’m honored to receive all of the great music and I’ve already shared some with you, and will be sharing a lot more. If you have CDs you’re interested in donating, or even selling, I’m always in the market.

Just let me know.

Coming up on Saturday, our first hour is all about the new releases, and we’ve got a bunch for you. Most of it is Americana, because there’s a lot just being released right now. But it’s not all Americana, we have rock from Styx and blues from Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and even a little bluegrass.

In the second hour, we have the Celtic Connection with music from The Tannahill Weavers, Mary Black, and The High Kings. There will be some sweet sounds in that set! Then the block programming kicks in with sets from Warren Zevon (I finally got some of his early albums), blues master Son Seals, and rockabilly chanteuse Wanda Jackson.

In our third hour, we’ve got a jazz set and a Jimmy Buffett song that didn’t get its due in 2013, so I’m bringing it out of musical mothballs and playing it. There’s new blues from Piper & The Hard Times and Mike Farris. Plus Eric Clapton, the Eurythmics, and the combo of Barbra Streisand and Paul McCartney.

And the topper is a preview of Saturday’s JAM Inc Presents with a first time pairing of Tommy Emmanuel and Stanley Jordan! Two giants in their field teamed up for the first time and it all happened at the Beacon Theatre in Hopewell.

So, do what you need to do to get up early. Set your alarm clock (or phone) and don’t snooze it. Get up and drink that coffee. Eat a healthy breakfast and grab your radio and turn that dial to one of the VPM-Music Stations, 93.1 or 107.3. You could also put your computer’s address to vpm.org and listen. It’s fun to listen live, but if you miss it then, you can always check out our Music Archive page and listen to the past couple of weeks’ shows.

Hello Porchers!

I hope you are surviving the heat by staying cool in the air conditioning. If you’ve had to be outside, I hope you were taking frequent breaks and hydrating. I’m not great with heat so I’ve been spending a lot of time at my desk and checking out music to share with you.

Saturday is fully charged with the first hour celebrating new music from all over the country! There’s music from Lukas Nelson, Echo Valley, Big Country Bluegrass, Clifton Chenier, and Taylor Rae among others. I’m always excited about new music, I have hope that each new piece of music will be my next favorite song.

Even when the music falls short of expectations, I know I’m just getting closer to the next big thing. I hope you feel the same.

In the second hour there’s the Celtic Connection, plus a set from the new Van Morrison CD, and a special anniversary nod for a pair of long-time listeners. Plus there’s a salute to the architect of rock and roll, Little Richard.

Hour three means Jazz along with a Mulligan’s Stew of great music. The Jazz features Vincent Ding with Steve Kortyka, Richard Burton (no, not the great Welsh actor), and Juan Carlos Quintero.

Mrs. Professor advanced me a little on my allowance and I used it to pick up some older CDs from the likes of Alabama Shakes and The Black Crows. Plus a blistering number from the Allman Brothers Band, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Steeley Dan, and Sam Cooke.

Don’t forget our sneak peek behind the curtain of Saturday’s episode of JAM Inc Presents.

So, get that coffee percolating and get settled in. We’ll start the shenanigans at 10:00 a.m. and keep rolling until 1:00 p.m. If you’re in the Richmond, Virginia area you can join us on one of the VPM-Music stations, 93.1 or 107.3, or if you want to catch us on your computer – the whole world is welcome on the Porch, just point your browser to vpm.org.

If you miss the show live, you can check it out starting Monday at vpm.org/music-archive. It should be up for a couple of weeks so you won’t miss out.

As always, everyone is welcome here on John’s Porch, so bring your friends!

Hello Porchers!

It’s the first full weekend of June, we’re barreling through the first half of the year, and looking for some great music to act as our collective soundtrack. I’m hoping that you will enjoy the variety I’ve prepared for you for this week.

Saturday’s first hour is full of brand-new releases, mostly Americana, with a few surprises thrown in for fun. We’re going to hear a brand-new song from Grace Potter (I’m not sure if she’s backed by the Nocturnals), a little something from Jade Bird, and a genre-busting new song from Molly Tuttle.

Plus, something from our friends Tornado Sky, as well as new material from Patty Griffin and Sierra Hull.

There’s more, but this is just a little sneak peek to what’s coming your way.

Hour two features the Celtic Connection and block programming from Elvis Costello, Genesis, and a couple from the J. Geils Band.

Hour three showcases some new jazz, although I’m holding off on world music until I get some more CDs. Then we’ve got three dynamic ladies: Adrianna Marie, Ashley McBryde, and Bettye LaVette.

Then there’s work from Asia, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, and Keith Emerson dueting with Oscar Peterson. And just to have a little something on the mellow style, there are songs from Oscar Brown Jr. and Nat King Cole.

I hope you can join me for the full three hours, but if you can’t, I hope you’ll drop in for however long you can. We’ll get rolling at 10 a.m. and hold forth until 1 p.m. on both Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th. You can find John’s Porch on VPM-Music, 93.1 and 107.3 on your FM dial or streaming online at vpm.org.

If you can’t join us live, be sure to catch up at vpm.org/music archive. You know everyone will be talking about it at the office on Monday!

Hello Porchers!

Welcome to another weekend and I certainly hope your plans include spending a little time on the world’s largest metaphorical and mythological porch, where all the chairs are comfortable, libations run freely, shoes are not required, and the music falls softly on your ears.

I’m planning on a few changes this week and I hope you will like them. Since our dear friend, Annie Parnell, has pulled up stakes and moved on to Nashville (safe travels Annie) I won’t get to sit in and play some jazz every once in a while. Well, to remedy that, I’ve decided to add a Jazz Set to hour three. Three songs that will focus on the new material that we receive every week.

I might mix in a classic or two every once in a while just for grins.

There will also be more world music – this week it’s in hour two, but I will probably move it to hour three in the future.

So that’s all the news that’s fit to print, and as always I look forward to your feedback concerning the music and its presentation.

But what else is going on, you may ask? We’ve got some great music lined up for you including a lot of new Americana in the first hour. There’s Jonathan Moody, Joe Barksdale with Sarah Jarosz, Ryan Stewart, MoonShroom, and a young man making his blues debut with Nola Blue Records with his interpretation of an old James Son Thomas song. Who is he? His name is Harrell “Young Rell” Davenport and I’m expecting big things from him.

Hour two features the Celtic Connection, the Four Tops, a request from Mary for some Steve Forbert, and our World Music selection suggested by Bitsy – an aboriginal performer named Geoffrey Gurrumu Yunupingu who unfortunately passed away far too young.

I think you will love his voice.

Hour three has Jazz, some new blues, a few surprises and a sample from Saturday’s episode of Jam Inc Presents.

It’s a cornucopia of great music and you are invited! So make plans to attend, dress is whatever you feel like – it’s okay by me. I’ll be on the air from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and I hope you will join me. I’ll be on 93.1 and 107.3 on your FM dial or online at vpm.org! Keep that caffeine coming!

John’s Porch is Cooking Up Some Tasty Treats

Hello Porchers!

I’m so glad to be back with you this weekend, May 17-18 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. as we celebrate New Arrivals, Classic Content, Obscure Gems and Forgotten Favorites! I’ve got 30-plus songs to share with you and I am eager to hear your response.

Hour One is always dedicated to new releases and this week, there are some real diamonds mixed in. Mumford & Sons for one, The Last Revel (who are coming to the Richmond Music Hall on May 21st) for another, Alex Williams for another, and toping it all off is a duet from Steve Perry and Willie Dixon.

Hour Two is for block scheduling and features the Celtic Connection with a live cut from Runrig, and classics from Rod Stewart and The Pogues. Then there’s a new-to-me release of a album that is a tribute to songwriter and singer Leonard Cohen. We’ll hear from Iggy Pop, Mavis Staples, and Sarah McLachlan.

There’s also a tribute to animals – with a long distance dedication and three classic tracks from The Platters.

Hour Three is all over the place with some Rockabilly, Rock, Soul, and the only good thing about a terrible movie. Oh, yeah, there’s also a sneak peek at what’s coming up on JAMInc later in the day.

So, get up early and get that coffee brewing. I will be well-caffeinated and I hope you will be bright-eyed as well. Invite your friends, your families, your pets, and anybody else that you run into.

The more the merrier and remember, there’s always room on the Porch.

Tune your radio dial to VPM-Music, either 93.1 or 107.3 or point your browser to VPM.org. However you find me, you will be welcome. And whether you can make it for one hour, two hours, all three hours, or only for a little while when you are running errands or taking the kids to practice, I would love to see you drop by.

Hello Porchers!

It’s an exciting time on John’s Porch this weekend, or should I say Henry and John’s Porch? See, I’m going to be at the RVA Bluegrass Jam on Saturday serving as one of the emcees on one of the stages. I did it last year and had a blast. My radio partner Henry Cook has volunteered to take my place on Saturday and he tells me he’s put together a killer show.

You’re in good hands as Henry really knows his stuff.

I can’t wait to hear the playback as I always learn a lot from our conversations.

I’ve put together a fun Sunday show with lots of new releases in the first hour, including one from some friends in Minnesota. I thought the song was lovely and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Hour two will be our Block Programming and Celtic Connection.

The Celtic Connection will feature the Tannahill Weavers since I just got my hands on several of their releases after seeing them live at The Tin Pan. What a great experience!

Then there are sets from David Bowie, Pink Floyd, and a little something from Peter, Paul And Mary. Since we lost Peter Yarrow in January, I thought it would be nice to give him a fond farewell. I met Yarrow when he played the Richmond Coliseum and he was one of the most gracious celebrities I’ve ever met.

In hour three I’ve put together three sets of connected songs. One, you’ll have to guess the connection. So feel free to email me at [email protected] and make your guess. Winners will have my eternal congratulations and bragging rights.

I’ve left one set empty in case I get some bluegrass at the Jam. I hope I do so I can share more of it with you.

So get up early and get ready for Henry. Make sure you are well caffeinated as you won’t want to miss any of his selections. Tune your radio dial to 93.1 or 107.3 or point your browser to vpm.org and settle in for three hours of great music on both Saturday and Sunday. I’ll miss talking to you on Saturday, but why don’t you join me after the show. Details at rvabluegrassjam.com.

Hello Porchers!

Your chief shinanagator here, sorry about the last few weeks of missing posting a blog, but things have been relatively crazy here at Porch Headquarters. I finally got a few minutes to put my feet up (relaxing is the only way to live) and tell you about what to expect on Saturday.

You know that the first hour is always dedicated to the future. I am constantly looking into the magic crystal 8-ball to see who the next big acts are, and it always comes up with “Your guess is as good as mine, pal, I don’t have ears.” The magic crystal 8-ball is a bit of a smart aleck.

So, I go out looking for fresh voices and I think I’ve found some really good ones for this week. There’s something new from our pals The Wood Brothers and something exciting from the great Wayne Baker Brooks. But they’re not alone. No sir-ree-bob, we’re playing sides from the likes of Amy Irving – with Steve Earle, can you believe it. Adding to the fun are Little Feat and Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Be still my heart.

That’s just the first hour. In the second hour, I’m going to interview Phillip Gravely and Tripp Johnson about the upcoming RVA Bluegrass Jam and you won’t want to miss that. Or the Jam itself, so make plans to join us if you can. I’ll be one of the emcees and will be shaking hands with anyone who wants to join me in malarky and shenanigans,

Plus, I’ll have a couple of bluegrass tunes from the Cary Street Ramblers and Bracey Junction. It’s good stuff.

Then there’s our block programming with Brody Buster (I’ve reviewed his latest CD on my Substack blog, professorjohnnyp.substack.com), Melissa Etheridge, and Jesse Cook.

Where’s the Celtic Connection, you ask? It’s in hour three along with new material from my blues brother from another mother, Bobby Blackhat. There’s also new songs from Valerie June and Samantha Fish, and classics from the likes of James Taylor and The Police.

And surprises, don’t forget the surprises and maybe even a story or two.

So set that alarm clock and the coffee machine, you want to be bright eyed for this one. We’ll be together from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and there’s plenty of room on the world’s largest mythological and metaphorical porch. Invite your friends to listen to one of the VPM Music stations (93.1 or 107.3) or point your browser to vpm.org.

I’ll be looking for you. And if you run into Mrs. Professor, wish her a happy anniversary. She deserves a medal for putting up with me all these years…
