When Pastor Barry Taylor at Whipple Creek Seventh-day Adventist Church asked Dr. Nicholas Will to lead the Health Ministry, Will was happy to serve. As a medical doctor, Will has a passion for improving the health and well-being of his community. “I’ve seen firsthand the devastating effects of obesity. That’s why I’m excited to help people take back
their health,” said Will. After praying for guidance, he found Best Weigh, a weight-loss program built on sound scientific principles and a strong spiritual foundation. The 10-week program was created by fellow doctor Elvin Adams (MD, MPH) and is available to church communities throughout the country.

Participants meet at the church one day each week
over the course of 10 weeks. The program offers nutrition guidance, encourages daily exercise, provides daily Bible verses for inspiration, and delivers peer accountability. They sit in groups at tables, and each group has a coach that people can turn to when they are struggling. “The goal is to help people create new, healthy habits over the course of 10 weeks, and then sustain that healthier lifestyle for life,” said Will. Everyone receives a daily scorecard for tracking food choices, exercise, prayer, reading scripture, and communication with their group coach.

A new program session will begin in January of 2026. Those who are interested can visit: https://whipplecreekwa.adventistchurch.org/health.

This month, we’re excited to celebrate Heath Potter as our
Greet Reader of the Month! In 2022, Heath and his wife, Afton,
moved to Ridgefield with their three children, drawn by both a deep family legacy and a love for the area. His family,
on both the Potter and Greely sides, were among Ridgefield’s original residents. They built their home on acreage
overlooking Lake River and the wildlife refuge. It’s a peaceful spot where they enjoy beautiful sunsets and frequent visits from deer, herons, and other wildlife—an everyday reminder of how special life in Ridgefield can be.

With three active kids, life is full and fast-paced. Between sports practices, family adventures, and time outdoors,
the Potters stay busy fishing, camping, skiing, or gardening alongside Afton’s flower farm, Ridge Pedal Blooms. Afton
also runs Little Spuds, her at-home pediatric urgent care practice that provides care to families throughout the
community. Heath works remotely for 6 Degrees Health, which allows him to stay close to home and enjoy family time.

Heath says Greet Ridgefield has been a wonderful way to stay connected with the community and learn more about
local families and events. “We always look forward to each issue of Greet Ridgefield,” he says. “It lands on our
corner table after the first flip-through and sticks around for later reading.”

Holiday Tamales: A Family Tradition Wrapped in Love
Written by: Shelby Murray

There’s something truly comforting about the smell of freshly steamed tamales filling the kitchen during the holidays. While making tamales may seem daunting at first, it’s really not too hard—especially when done together as a family. In our home, tamales are more than a meal—they’re a
Christmas tradition.

Every December, we gather in the kitchen, laughing, chatting, and assembling dozens (sometimes 24 dozen!) of tamales. Most are frozen to enjoy throughout the year, but a special batch is always reserved for Christmas Day. For us, it simply isn’t Christmas without tamales and the joy of making them together.

Tamale Meat Filling Ingredients:
1 pork rump roast (8 lbs)
2–3 lbs ground beef
2–3 tsp salt
1 bottle chili powder
1 tbsp ground cumin

1. Place the pork roast in a roaster with 2 cups of water. Cook at 250°F for 6–8 hours, until the meat is tender and falls apart.
2. In a skillet, fry the hamburger with one whole garlic
clove. Add the cooked beef to the shredded pork.
3. Mix in salt, chili powder, and cumin to season.

Assembling the Tamales
1. Drain and towel-dry the soaked corn husks.
2. Form golf ball–sized portions of masa.
3. Place a corn husk on a tortilla press, then set a masa ball in the center. Cover it with a small piece of plastic (a cut section of a grocery bag works well) and gently press down.
4. Lift the press—the masa should now
be evenly spread on the husk.
5. Add a spoonful of meat filling to the center
(not too much—you need room to fold).
6. Fold one side of the husk over the filling,
then fold up the bottom, and roll to close.
7. Repeat until all tamales are assembled.

Cooking and Storing

Arrange tamales upright in a steamer
and cook for 2 hours.

Allow them to cool before opening; the
masa will be sticky until it sets.

To freeze: place uncooked tamales in
labeled freezer bags by the dozen.
(Do not cook before freezing—reheating cooked tamales can
make them dry.)

Athlete of the Month: Jamison McCann
Written by: Janell Marbrey

If you spent any time at a Ridgefield High School varsity basketball game last winter, you likely heard the name “Jamo” echoing across the hardwood from cheering fans and grateful teammates. That nickname belongs to senior Jamison McCann. Jamison picked up a basketball at age five and joined his first team, Orange Crush, at six. Now a keys starter for the Spudders, he plays both point guard and shooting guard and has racked up some impressive accolades throughout his career. Last season, he was named First Team All- League, Second Team All-Region, and led the region in points per game. “I love everything about basketball,” Jamison says. “It’s fast- paced, one person can really impact the game, and it’s a smaller team so you get to know all the guys more.”

Like most high school athletes who make varsity as a freshman, Jamison plays year-round and works hard to better his game. “When I was younger, I was terrible! Worst player on the team,” he laughs, “but I kept working, and I trust in all my work.” Here’s a small glimpse into that work: Jamo plays club ball with South Sound Roots, based out of Seattle. During
high school off-seasons, he travels to Seattle once a week for practices right after school, turning his whole day into a basketball commitment. He also trains 3–4 times a week with Ashley Corral, a former WNBA player and local trainer. “She pushes me to be better and surrounds me with other high-level, like-minded guys.”

While he loves the sport, he admits it can be tough. “The hardest part is the mental side. There’s a lot that can go wrong in basketball, so you’ve got to keep your head up. You can miss a shot and then have to get back on defense. You’ve got to keep a next-play mentality.”

Off the court, you’ll find Jamison hanging out with friends, playing NBA 2K, or watching movies with his family, including 10-year-old brother Declan. “We’re close. He plays sports too, we’ve got a lot in common.” Jamison also plays football
for Ridgefield as a wide receiver and defensive back.

The Ridgefield Lions Club is sponsoring two free holiday movies at the Old Liberty Theater in Ridgefield. “The Polar Express” (Rated G) will be shown Friday, December 19, at 7 p.m. “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” (2000 version with Jim Carrey, Rated PG) will be shown Saturday, December 20, at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. for each showing. “ This is our club’s way of giving back to the community in a special way and creating memories for children and families during the holiday season,” said club President David Schick. “We hope everyone will come.”

This is the first year that Ridgefield Lions have sponsored this event. Free tickets will be distributed on Saturday, December 13 from 8 AM to 10 AM at the theater. The Lions ask that food donations be made at the time for the Green Bag Project though a food donation is not required to obtain a ticket. All other concession items can be obtained at seasons coffee next-door to the theater.
