Let’s listen more.

Let’s listen more.

“I spent my freshman year of high school in Austria. Through an exchange program. I had a religion professor there that was fantastic. He communicated to us that asking questions was an important part of growing your faith, and that questions are excellent things. In the U.S. I had always felt like my questions were met with a reaction like, ‘Oh no, you’re questioning things! Here’s the answer, don’t question things!’ Everyone freaked out. But I wasn’t planning on leaving the church, I just had questions about things. This professor was like, ‘Here, why don’t I help you find your own answers?’ I really think that was one of the key things that kept me in the church as a teenager, this idea that I could ask questions.

We’re really good at pointing people to ‘correct’ answers- here’s the explanations of Daniel and Revelation, here are the 28 Fundamental Beliefs, here’s a string of Bible verses to prove our point. But we aren’t always good at saying, ‘Here’s why I believe this way. Let’s study it together. Why do you think what you think? Let’s take a look at it.’ I think that’s so important, both in studying God’s word and in leadership. When it comes to leading things like youth groups, board meetings, and Pathfinders, we don’t just need people to say, ‘This is how I do it.’ We need people to say, ‘Let’s figure it out together,’ to let other people take ownership of those things and take a step back. We need people willing to be there to help and support if they’re needed, but also to be willing to let go.

One of my favorite quotes from Ellen White essentially says, ‘Truth will lose nothing through investigation.’ Our church was built by people who asked questions, who studied Scripture deeply and weren’t afraid of the dissonance that might come between their previously held beliefs and what they were learning. We tend to think we’ve figured it all out now. At times we’ve stopped asking questions. We don’t think there’s dissonance left for us to struggle with, but there is- especially for so many people who didn’t grow up in the church or have left the church for various reasons and want to come back but want to ask questions.”

A crew of volunteers from Walla Walla, College Place and Milton-Freewater, including Walla Walla University students and Lightfoot's Towing, helped Matt and Julee Smith install sandbags on their property to protect their home from the Walla Walla River flooding. https://komonews.com/news/local/family-raising-money-to-send-shooting-victims-body-to-kenya

A week before Christmas, Angela Atieno (age 34) and Janet Oyuga (age 32), dedicated caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients, returned home from their respective jobs. They had recently entered a rent-to-own agreement for their home in Federal Way, Washington – a symbolic event that they had finally ‘made it’ in the U.S. Soon after moving in, their 85-year-old tenant shot Janet five times and killed her, and then shot Angela in the back. Angela barely survived.

A week after Christmas, a fire completely destroyed their home and all of their belongings. Angela is now suffering extraordinary loss and heartbreak while needing to heal.

“The two sisters were very close,” Festus Gumbo, lay pastor told local news agencies. “You try to be kind and then out of your kindness, you meet up with something most unfortunate that is least expected.”

The True Vine SDA Fellowship church family is coming together to raise funds to help Angela and her family. The response already from friends, church family, and strangers is helpful.

“As the True Vine church community continues to navigate this tragic and complicated event, the expenses of the funeral, transportation of the body to Kenya, hospital costs and recovery of Angela, and recovery from the loss of home and possessions all need to be covered,” says Bruce Koch, district pastor. “Along with the grief recovery of the family and Angela’s recovery, these are already the subjects of intense prayer.”

Koch adds: “Thank you for your heartfelt support and concern over this tragedy.”
