Has the “evolution” of kayak bass fishing hurt the sport?

It all started with a kayak, a paddle, and a couple fishing rods. But now many kayak bass fishermen are fishing in $5k kayaks, with $1.2k electric motors, thousands of dollars in electronics, and a dozen fishing rods and attachments. If you want to compete, you have to pay to play. Many of the newer “kayaks” resemble small skiffs, and not kayaks.

If we go back 20 years, kayak anglers were fishing from kayaks as an alternative to expensive bass boats. Anglers can now buy a used tournament ready bass boats for the same as a tournament ready kayak. With boat tournaments paying out way more money and having more competition…what’s stopping them?

Be honest…forward facing sonar makes fishing easier.

After hours of successful fishing in the main lake channel, I came across a small cove. My experience told me there wouldn’t be fish there since I was doing so good outside the coves. But it wouldn’t hurt to try.

I made a dozen casts with no bites, and then I got to thinking. With forward facing sonar, I could easily see if there were fish in this little cove.

That doesn’t mean I could get them to bite, as proponents of the technology say. It does mean I would know if they were there or not, and wouldn’t waste time casting. That would be valuable time in a tournament.

Forward facing sonar technology is nothing short of amazing, but it’s also making fishing easier. It’s to the point that professional anglers are using it, not because they want to, but because they have to.

It makes fishing easier. Therefore, it has no place in tournament fishing. It definitely doesn’t have any place in kayak tournaments.

The Berkley MaxScent Moeba: The good and the bad

The first time I laid eyes on the Moeba I thought it was too big and too expensive. But I still had to give it a try.

I rigged the green pumpkin Moeba much like a wacky rig. I inserted a 3/0 octopus circle hook through the center and kept it weightless. It’s slow sinking and I wanted to keep it that way.

On the first cast, I watched the Moeba slowly sink out of sight while the tentacles fluttered. It looked more like a ball of vegetation to me, and less like a living, cold blooded creature.

The second cast landed between two submerged stumps in shallow water. I waited as the Moeba sank, and before I could give it a tug, I had the first bite. I brought in a 2 pound 12 ounce bass with a follower about the same size.

I made close to 50 more casts without a bite when disaster struck. I made a cast and watched my hook go left and the Moeba go about 30 feet to the right. It had torn off of the hook -$15 down the drain.

Convinced of this baits success, I still purchased a couple more. This time they are rigged with double frog hooks to help keep them on the hook.

Anyone else had success with the Moeba?
