The Pageland Watermelon Festival, an annual celebration of the area’s top crop, regularly draws thousands of people each July to the quaint downtown streets of Pageland.

But not long after dark on July 18, as families roamed the carnival and bounced between vendor booths, gunfire shattered the lively evening.

SLED investigators said a 17-year-old opened fire after an argument between teens escalated. Sean Davis, a 17-year-old rising high school senior from Pageland, died after being shot in the chest.
