It’s not “just getting older.”
For generations, women have been told that leaking when they laugh, cough, or sneeze, pelvic pressure, rushing to the bathroom, difficulty fully emptying the bladder or bowel, and sexual discomfort are simply part of aging.
They’re not.
These can be signs of pelvic floor disorders—and women don’t have to simply live with them.
Pregnancy and childbirth can contribute to pelvic floor injury, but they aren’t the only factors. Genetics, chronic coughing or constipation, changes in weight, diabetes, hypertension, lower back issues, and other factors can place stress on the pelvic floor over time.
And the problem may be years in the making.
In Episode 47 of ELEVATE WELLNESS, Dr. Janet Harris-Hicks with Southern Shores Urogynecology joins us for an honest conversation about pelvic floor health, the symptoms women are often told to normalize, and why you don’t have to wait until they become severe to start the conversation.
A conversation worth having—and one many women may wish they’d had sooner.
