I’m genuinely excited for 815 Day this year.

There is SO much going on around Rockford over the next few days, and I really hope people get out and pack these places.

I spend a lot of time on this page talking about Rockford’s past. The places we remember, the things we’ve lost, and the stories that made this city what it is. Maybe that’s why there’s something about seeing Rockford busy that really gets me.

People downtown. Music playing. Events happening all over town. Restaurants and businesses full. People running into people they know.

It brings back memories of those times when it felt like the whole city was out doing something.

We spend plenty of time talking about what Rockford has lost, what we need, and what we wish was different. Sometimes it’s nice to stop looking backward for a minute and appreciate seeing a city with a whole lot going on right now.

So pick something. Go somewhere. Wander around. Eat somewhere local. Check out something you’ve never been to before.

More than anything, just get out and enjoy Rockford.

I really hope over the next few days we get to see this city absolutely packed with people enjoying it.

The place this building sits is also where Swedish immigrants first came to Rockford, and eventually turned 7th street into Rockford’s Swedish business district.

I’ve got a slightly different story for you.

For those who don’t know, my name is Adam, and I’m the person behind Beyond 815.

Friday morning, I’m taking a few-day road trip from Rockford to Washington, D.C., with two of my kids; my son Owen, 23, and my daughter Natalie, 10.

I visited Washington once before, back in eighth grade, but I haven’t returned since rediscovering my love of history.

This time, we’re going to document the trip from all three of our perspectives and see what kind of story we bring home.

Washington is obviously well beyond the usual boundaries of Beyond 815, so I don’t know how much of the trip will end up here. I’m simply throwing the idea out there to see whether anyone would be interested in a slightly different kind of content for a few days.

Either way, we’ll record the journey and see where the story takes us.

When the name “Midway” was coined, it was because Rockford was the midway point between Chicago and this amazing historic city.

Feeling a little nostalgic, so I thought I’d reshare an older video I made about Metropolitan Hall, along with a personal story.

This was one of the first historic buildings where I had the opportunity to take on a leadership role. I was the lead electrician on the project, and at the time, it was only the second historic building I had ever worked in.

Back then, it was just work.

I didn’t realize that experience would help spark something in me. Years later, that same interest in old buildings, local history, and the stories behind them would eventually grow into Beyond 815.

I love this community, and I love learning more about the history hiding all around us. Being able to share these stories with you has become something I genuinely enjoy.
