Documentary Structure and Storytelling Workshop

Tomorrow August 24: First session (on Zoom) of the two part workshop on documentary structure and storytelling workshop.
Sign up today!
This two-part Documentary Structure and Storytelling workshop is broken up into Part 1: The Essentials of Documentary Storytelling and Part 2: The Big Picture of Documentary Structure. If you are working on your first documentary, it is recommended you sign up for both sessions since they build on each other. However, it is also possible to sign up for these sessions a la carte.
Part 1: The Essentials of Documentary Storytelling
Tuesday, August 24, 2021 7:00 - 8:30 pm | $75
Just because documentary filmmaking is about recording actuality, filmmakers still need to pay the same attention to visual storytelling as you would with any fiction film. In this workshop, you will learn more about the tools of screen grammar and sequencing, how to break down a situation into the right shots, and deliver footage that makes sense (and saves you time and money) in the edit room.
Part 2: The Big Picture of Documentary Structure
Tuesday, August 31, 2021 7:00 - 8:30 pm | $75
If you were building a house, you would need to have a blueprint which provides a plan of what it will look like and where you need to use different tools. A film is no different. You need to have some idea of the direction of where the story is heading even if you don’t have a script. Breaking down hours of footage of different characters, in different locations and at different times into a workable rough cut is one of the toughest exercises in post-production. For filmmakers in pre-production or production, this session will help you better organize and control your shoots with specific goals to avoid ending up with tons of material that won’t help you tell the story.
For filmmakers who are beginning post-production, this session will focus on how to get a handle on your material by defining the thematic progression with tools that are available to every filmmaker. The goal is to help to find your structure and drive your story forward.
Workshop Note: Because of social distancing needs, this workshop will be held online via Zoom, but building community is one of Docs In Progress's guiding principles. So in order to allow time to meet fellow students, the Zoom room will open 15 minutes early and remain open after the class ends each night. It's the best we can do for now until we can all come together in person.

Writing for Documentary

I will give a virtual workshop on Writing for Documentary at Docs in Progress. When? May 11 from 7:00 - 8:30 pm EST. Hope to see you there! -Your written proposal is possibly your first and maybe your only shot at impressing a commissioning editor or funder. It’s important to write a proposal that will capture their attention. But, you say: “I am a filmmaker, not a writer, and my idea speaks for itself.” A commissioner’s/funder’s response? If you can’t write a comprehensive proposal why should I trust you to make a compelling documentary?
In this workshop, we’ll learn about the ingredients of a documentary proposal and how the written materials will also help you to write grant applications. We’ll also look at treatments and pitch decks, which are all important documents to keep in reserve when planning a documentary and applying for grants.

Workshop that covers what you should know about writing documentary proposals and treatments

Documentary Interviewing Skills Bootcamp (IE1-1260)

This Saturday, October 27 from 10 am - 4 pm at Docs In Progress in Silver Spring: Documentary Interviewing Skills Bootcamp
Conducting an on-camera interview can be challenging. On one hand, you want to make sure that the technical aspects are under control, so you’ll deliver footage that is visually and aurally attractive. On the other hand, your goal is to capture the true spirit of the person you’re interviewing by making sure that the process is not only effective but also safe and respectful for the person who is being interviewed. In this full day documentary interviewing skills bootcamp team-taught by Adele Schmidt and Jennifer Brown, you will learn the ins and outs of interviewing. Adele will build on years of experience as a documentary filmmaker to go over the technical aspects when setting up and interview, including camera placement, thinking about both what you see and how it sounds, and do's and don'ts while interviewing. Jennifer will share skills she has developed in making videos in the areas of behavioral health advocacy, stigma and discrimination to help you understand how to manage the emotional tenor of the interview, including dealing with interviewees revealing a story for the first time, sharing a traumatic story, or breaking down during the interview.
Space is limited so advanced registration is highly recommended. Save on fees if register by midnight Tuesday (October 23).

I am very proud to be the video editor of this newly released 72-minute documentary "NORMAL ISN'T REAL: SUCCEEDING WITH LEARNING DISABILITIES & ADHD" by my TV producer friend Krys Kornmeier. She developed an interest in learning and attention issues when her son was diagnosed with them. The documentary captures the stories of 4 successful young adults who have figured out how to develop their strengths and manage their challenges. The film is being self-distributed and has been accepted to major national conferences, with discussions underway for partnering with organizations for nationwide screenings. The website is under construction, but here's the trailer! Music by Ut Gret! https://vimeo.com/231541096

Or not seeing your family for years because they were deported. Renata, Evelyn, and Antonio were young children when their parents brought them to the U.S. in search of a better life; they were teenagers when their families were deported. Today, they are known as Dreamers. Indivisible takes place at a pivotal moment in their lives, as they fight for a pathway to citizenship and a chance to be reunited with their loved ones.
