🔗 Do social media links count as backlinks?

Ask a link builder, they'll say no. Most social links carry a nofollow tag, so they don't pass any real SEO juice.

Technically true. 🚫

But here's what that argument misses.

ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity don't just read your website. They read Reddit threads, review sites, Facebook groups, niche forums. 📱

If your brand shows up in the right community, that's not nothing.

That's exactly the kind of content answer engines pull from when they're deciding who to recommend. 👀

So yes, technically, most social links won't move your rankings.

But if your only goal is ranking, you're already playing yesterday's game. 🎯

Want the link that actually does everything? Rankings, AI citations, AND real traffic?

That's a placement on a real blog people actually read. Not a social post. 📝

🔗 Got a backlink but nothing's happening?

Google probably hasn't found it yet.

A backlink sitting on a page Google hasn't crawled does nothing for you.

Not less SEO value. Zero. 🚫
Here's the good news: most links get indexed on their own within a couple of weeks. No action needed. ⏳

But if you can't wait:

📝 Submit the page in Google Search Console (48 hours, if you have access)

🔗 Link to the page yourself (tier 2 links), so it gets crawled along with everything else

📱 Post the URL on socials, gets crawled way faster than a regular page

What doesn't work: pinging tools. Little to no actual effect on Google's crawling. ❌

And be careful with paid "indexing services."

Some are just running the same tricks above.

Others are running your link through spammy networks that can do more harm than good. ⚠️

🤖 Quick question: do you actually know what agentic search means?

You've probably seen the term floating around. Here's what it actually means.

Most AI still works the same way: one question in, one answer out. Agentic search doesn't.

An AI agent runs its own research instead.

Checks multiple sources. Compares them.

Then decides on its own whether to search again before it gives you an answer. 🔁

Here's why that matters.

If an agent is comparing five sources before it recommends something, your homepage is just one of those five.

Not the deciding vote anymore. 👀

What gets you cited is showing up where the agent already looks: comparison posts, reviews, listicles other people wrote.

Clean site, solid on-page work? The floor, not the ceiling. 🧱

Off-page is what gets you into the actual answer.

We broke down what agentic search is and what to do about it.

Does self-promotional content get you AI citations? 🤔

🧪 Ahrefs ran a real experiment on self-promotional AI SEO content instead of just guessing.

Mateusz Makosiewicz published 34 self-promotional pages (listicles, reviews, opinion pieces) for two different things: a brand new conference and an already-established tool.

Then tracked 9,886 AI answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot for months. 📊

The result is a split one.

For the new conference: it worked. 82% of its new mentions in previously empty answer slots came straight from citing one of these pages. 🎯

For the established tool: only 6% did. AI already had plenty of other sources talking about it.

But here's the catch ⚠️: getting cited isn't the same as getting recommended.

43% of the time AI cited the conference page, it still recommended a different event entirely.

And most citations weren't permanent. A page could get cited once and never show up again. 👻

Here's the part that stands out: the pages that held up were the ones fitting a real gap, not self-published rankings AI (and readers) learn to discount.

That's the whole case for earning mentions on other people's sites instead of just your own.

Third-party citations don't carry the same self-promotional discount.

That's exactly what we do.

Our done-for-you link building earns you real mentions on the sites already getting cited for your space, and our AI visibility tracker shows you which citations are actually landing across all six engines. 🔗

If you asked ChatGPT to recommend a tool in your category right now, would it name you?

That's what AI share of voice measures.

Not your rankings, not your traffic. Whether AI mentions you when someone actually asks.

The catch: you can't fix this by writing more on your own site.

AI pulls its answers from what other people say about you, not from your own pages.

Comparison posts, review roundups, the kind of "top 10" content your buyers already read.

So the work is getting mentioned in that content. Same as link building, just aimed at a new outcome.

We wrote up how to measure it and what actually moves it.

Do you use the “Are you a bot?” captcha?

Maybe reconsider. It could be getting indexed by Google instead of your actual content. 👻

Via Search Engine Journal, from Google's John Mueller:

When your security flags a visitor as “suspicious”, this page shows up. The problem is that Google indexes the bot-check page, not the content behind it.

What’s even worse is because this screen exists on thousands of sites, it’s marked as duplicate content.

Next, someone else’s version of the page is marked as canonical, and the rest gets flagged as a duplicate. ❌

Your real content can drop from the index.

Worst part: it loads fine for you, because the screen only triggers for flagged visitors.

The site looks healthy when you check it.

How to catch it: open Search Console.

The Page Indexing report flags duplicates, and URL Inspection shows which URL Google picked as the main version.

Not yours? Dig in.

The fix is usually your CDN, host, or bot-protection layer, not the page. Fix it there, then hit Validate Fix.

People who call your business after asking ChatGPT are more likely to be real leads than callers from any other channel. 📞

New Invoca data (via Search Engine Journal) puts a number on it:
📊 ChatGPT-referred calls qualify as leads 49% of the time, about 10 points above average.

The likely reason?

They already did their research inside the assistant, so they call further along in the decision.

Which raises one question: is ChatGPT recommending YOU?
It can only recommend what it reads, and it reads third-party articles, not your homepage.

That's what our done-for-you link building earns: you tell us the prompts you want to get cited for, and our team gets your brand into the content ChatGPT actually pulls from.

SEO doesn't always mean a full audit or weeks of work. 🛠️
Some of the biggest gains I've seen came from small fixes to pages that were already close.

The kind you can knock out in an afternoon.

Here are a few of my favorites 👇

📄 Optimize pages stuck on page 2.

Anything ranking 8-20 already has Google's trust. Tighten the intro, answer the keyword clearly, add a couple of sections competitors cover.

Often enough to push it to page one.

🔍 Mine Search Console for long-tail keywords you already rank for.

Your pages are getting impressions for questions they barely answer. Add a section that answers them directly and watch engagement climb.

No new content needed.

🔗 Add internal links to underlinked pages.

The fastest way to pass authority without building a single new link. Point your high-traffic pages at the ones you want to rank.

✍️ Rewrite weak title tags.

A top-five page can still underperform with a vague title. Make it specific, add the benefit, and your click-through rate does the rest.

🤖 Structure for AI Overviews and featured snippets.

Put a concise answer right after each question-based heading. That clear, early answer is what gets pulled into AI results.

🔄 Refresh outdated content.

Old stats and screenshots quietly drag pages down. A quick update signals relevance, and I've seen rankings rebound without touching the structure.

That's 6 of 14. The other 8 (schema, page speed, thin-page cleanup, alt text, and more) are in the full article.

A customer once tried to haggle our $800/month tool down to $500. 💸

Today they spend $65-70K a month with us.

Here's what changed 👇

Our co-founder Farzad Rashidi told this story on The SaaS Podcast with Omer Khan 🎙️

A CEO of a large marketing agency reached out wanting to buy a license of our do-it-yourself tool. It ran about $800/month, and he was trying to negotiate it down to $500.

Then he said something that flipped everything:

"We'll just pay you per result."

So we stopped selling a subscription and started selling outcomes.
That same customer is still with us today, and their spend has ramped up to around $65-70K a month.

Farzad's takeaway 👇

"It was very interesting to see how that conversation switched, how that attitude towards pricing changed when we, instead of focusing on a subscription fee, started focusing on outcomes.""

It's the same reason Farzad keeps saying: don't be scared of services.

Over six years of link building. And in that time we've made pretty much every mistake you can make. 😅

Some cost us weeks. One cost an entire email domain’s reputation.
So we wrote them all down, all 11, so you don't have to learn them the hard way. A few that trip up even experienced people 👇

📧 Skipping email setup and warmup.

Most link building mistakes happen before you ever send a pitch. Wrong domain setup, no warmup, and everything after it is dead on arrival.

🎯 "Just get any link you can."

That approach is done.

Ranking in the top 10 doesn't mean much if you're not in the AI Overview sitting above it, and pure PageRank won't put you there. Structured brand mentions in roundups will.

📉 Chasing high DR on dead pages.

A link on a page that gets even a single real visitor a month beats a DR 82 link on a page with 0 traffic. Metrics without traffic are vanity.

🔁 Treating it as one-and-done.

Links decay. Competitors keep moving. Stop building and your rankings quietly slide back.

👥 No dedicated link builder.

Squeezing outreach into a marketer's spare time almost never works. It's too important to leave as an afterthought.

The other 6 (plus the fixes for all of them) are in the full article. Link in comments.
