BEHIND THE SCENES AT FERAL ROOT

People usually see the finished bonsai.

But behind every tree is:
• Watering
• Wiring
• Repotting
• Fertilizing
• Cleaning benches
• Organizing inventory
• Studying and learning

Bonsai teaches patience because there are no shortcuts.

The small daily work matters.

That’s true for bonsai…
and honestly, it’s true for life too.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO WEDNESDAY?

Imagine this raw tree is sitting on your bench right now.

What direction would YOU take it?

⬇️ Cascade?
⬇️ Literati?
⬇️ Informal upright?
⬇️ Heavy bends and movement?
⬇️ Keep it natural?

One of the best ways to improve in bonsai is learning to SEE potential before the styling begins.

TREE OF THE WEEK - JAPANESE BLACK PINE

Few bonsai species command attention quite like the Japanese Black Pine.

Strong bark.
Powerful structure.
Timeless character.

These trees are famous for their rugged appearance and ability to develop incredible age over time.

One thing many people don’t realize:
Japanese Black Pines can actually do VERY well in Texas when grown properly.

The keys:
• Full sun
• Excellent drainage
• Strong airflow
• Careful watering during extreme heat

They reward patience more than almost any species in bonsai.

You don’t build a great pine in a season.
You build it over years.

And that’s part of what makes them special.

If you like this JBP and want to own it, reach out.

MEMORIAL DAY 🇺🇸🌲

Today, we pause to remember and honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

Freedom is never free.

At Feral Root Bonsai, we’re grateful for the opportunity to gather, create, learn, teach, and build community because of the sacrifices made by others before us.

Bonsai teaches patience, resilience, and endurance through hardship - qualities that remind us of the strength and courage shown by so many who served.

Today is more than a long weekend.
It’s a day of remembrance.
A day of gratitude.
A day to honor those who never made it home.

We remember.
We honor.
We are grateful.

From all of us at Feral Root Bonsai - thank you to the heroes and families who sacrificed for this nation. 🇺🇸

📖 BIBLE & BONSAI 🌳

Bonsai teaches us something powerful:
Growth takes time.

You cannot rush refinement.
You cannot force maturity.
And pruning is part of the process.

The same is true in our spiritual lives.

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” - ‭‭Philippians‬ ‭1‬:‭6‬ ‭ESV‬‬

God works patiently in us over time, shaping, refining, and strengthening us even when we cannot yet see the finished result.

Stay rooted.
Stay faithful.
Keep growing.

BAGELS & BONSAI

What an incredible time we had today at our Bagels & Bonsai workshop!

One of the things that made this class so special was the smaller, more intimate setting. It gave everyone more one-on-one time with their trees, more opportunities to ask questions, and created some really meaningful conversations around the table. There’s something special about people slowing down together, learning, creating, and encouraging each other along the way.

We had some amazing beginners in today’s class who caught on incredibly quickly. Watching everyone start to understand structure, pruning, and design decisions in real time was awesome to see. Every attendee should be proud of what they created today, these trees are only the beginning of their bonsai journey.

Thank you to everyone who came out, trusted the process, and shared part of your day with Feral Root Bonsai. We truly appreciate the support and community that continues to grow around these workshops.

And a huge thank you to The Bagel Lady Sub Shop & Coffee for hosting us again and helping create such a welcoming atmosphere.

BENCHSIDE SATURDAY

No fancy display today.

Just the bench.
The tools.
The wire.
And the work.

Most people only see the finished bonsai.

But the real beauty is in the process:
• The pruning
• The wiring
• The mistakes
• The learning
• The patience

That’s where bonsai teaches us the most.

WILD BONSAI WEDNESDAY

Not every bonsai starts refined.

Some begin twisted…
scarred…
weathered…
and overlooked.

That’s the beauty of bonsai.

Sometimes the best trees are the ones with the roughest beginnings.

Today’s reminder: Don’t only look for perfection, Look for POTENTIAL.

In bonsai, and in life, character matters more than perfection.

Would you work this raw material or pass on it?

TECHNIQUE TUESDAY

One thing that separates beginner bonsai from advanced bonsai?

DEPTH

A good bonsai doesn’t look flat. It should pull your eye INTO the tree.

Here’s one simple trick: Create layers.

Instead of branches all sitting on the same plane:
• Bring some branches forward
• Push some branches backward
• Leave open space between pads
• Allow the trunk line to remain visible

Depth creates realism.

Real trees in nature aren’t flat, and your bonsai shouldn’t be either.

This is one of the biggest design improvements people can make immediately.
