More than 50 billion taxpayer dollars were poured into GM during the 2008 government bailout. The mismanaged and union suffocated corporation was said to be "too big to fail". As the economy has improved so has GM, and they are now very profitable again. GM pays its labor force an average of $63 per hour in wages and benefits. GM workers have an incredible health insurance plan, paying only 4% of the cost compared to the national average of 34%. This apparently isn't enough for the UAW. Despite $7 billion of new investments offered by GM more than 50,000 workers have thrown off their work gloves and picked up a sign. They demand more. How much more? That question assumes there is a limit. An unholy alliance between leftist politicians, corporate cronies, and union leaders has made collective bargaining look much more like collective extortion. The theatrical infighting is comical. The union demands more, the politicians cry for "fair wages", the company screams that costs must be cut. In the end GM will submit to the demands because they've all been here before. When it all inevitably comes crashing down all three aforementioned groups will walk away wealthier thanks to the American taxpayer. Through all of this it is important to not be too critical of all the workers being held hostage. In the absence of right to work laws they have little choice but to be used as pawns for the enrichment of their union bosses. GM isn't in the car making business anymore, they are in the wealth redistribution business. A twisted reverse robin hood made possible by their loyal partners; corrupt politicians and the UAW.
