Pretty amazing. The latest version of my favorite photo editing application, Luminar Neo, adds an AI-powered photo restoration tool that includes scratch removal. I tried giving it something unorthdox: not an old photo but one I shot at dusk in August from a JFK airport departure lounge. Not scratches, but many reflections of interior lights, very difficult to remove with conventional tools. But Neo did it in about 90 seconds. Wow.

Coffee in Finsbury Park with my old pal Jaslyn Hall (after something like 15 years!) Apart from other connections, she was kind enough to use one of my pictures as the cover of Earthcore 2, a CD she produced for radio JJJ in Sydney in ‘96. I photographed the growling cur in Bali.

I rarely use generative AI in my photo editing, but here’s a fun experiment I just did. This is a colliery in Australia. Coal went up the sloping conveyor and across a horizontal one which dropped it in a long pile.

As you can see in the first version, the huge pile of coal is as black and featureless as coal in shadow can be. I wanted more texture or shading, so I selected it and used the prompt “large pile of coal” in Luminar Neo’s GENswap tool. See what it did: not only coal, but mining machinery!

I wouldn't use it professionally, because it messes up the logic of what the factory was doing. But entertaining.

. To mark it, here’s one my very old ones (1970) that has proved evergreen. Behind a Dublin church, two old dears have a good natter while the Holy Water soaks into the pavement. I love the whole idea of holy water in a 40-gallon drum with a spigot.

Looking for something else I ran across this one I did in Alaska nine years ago, that I think has a certain something. The Ruby Princess, shot from another liner with a tiny Sony compact camera at the (35mm) equivalent of a 400mm telephoto. 1/125 at f/6.3 and ISO 800. The EXIF data even tells me the altitude was 102 feet, which would be the height of my ship’s deck above the water. Part of Kulu Island in the background.
