New Music!
Hey Friends, one of our own Northern California guitar heroes, Tommy Merry of Gamma fame, has just released a dynamic new hard rock single you might want to check out called "Eyes of the Emerald Isle."
This production is a departure from the Gamma genre. A brief intro foreshadows the chorus, and a galloping guitar riff quickly leaps right into some powerful, hanging metal power chords delivered by subdued yet menacing overdriven guitars forming a foreboding backdrop to the verses' unfolding tale of romance and war.
The anthemic chorus riff is punctuated by a Celtic-inspired arpeggio cleverly befitting the lyrical theme. A dire vocal performance relates the tragic story of two lovers whose verdant island is soon besieged by conquering invaders. The chorus, bridge and interlude segments all feature a range of vocal and guitar effects, as well as icy synth swells which infuse a somewhat nostalgic vibe reminiscent of more emotionally laden scores of the late 70's and early 80's. Somehow the composition eludes genre labels rendering this a curiously evocative and dramatic sonic odyssey.
Tommy's guitars are impressive throughout. The first part of the main solo is rather artfully staged, starting off energetically yet taking a mercurial path that manages in short order to rebuild the torque necessary to climb to a transcendent climax. The second part of the solo features harmonized dual power-metal style lead guitars, followed by a brief interlude stripped right down to some thundering gated drums and a stealthy panning bass line glowering from the shadows through a moment of anticipatory steam-gathering. Finally, the song explosively catapults into the outro to conclude the score.
