A Swinging Good Time

Already in its 11th year, the Buy a Day of Hope charity golf tournament started by Shelbi Bennett and her family is still going strong! Held at the Empire Ranch Golf Course, the fundraiser attracted 109 golfers this year, many of them returning. All proceeds go to the El Dorado Hills Endowment Fund at the El Dorado Community Foundation. The foundation’s purpose is to provide lift for organizations, schools, and neighbors to help them soar to their own achievement. Participants had a great time with many surprises awaiting them throughout the course, including a chance to win a Mercedes Benz with a hole in one at the 18th hole. A dinner and raffle wrapped up the evening, with more than 50 prizes generously donated by various local companies and individuals. The event raised close to $30,000 for the El Dorado Community Foundation. Nikki Smaglik, who coordinated the event, said “I’m excited and honored to be carrying this tradition forward and being a part of something that gives back to our community. I have to say a big thank you to our sponsors and everyone who volunteered and participated. It could not have been a success without them.” Tamara Berg and Josh Nisbet were both extremely helpful throughout the day, spending time with and entertaining the participants, and helping emcee the awards ceremony and raffle after the event.

Royal Court Reigns at Vista Del Lago’s Homecoming Parade

The beginning of the new school year means all things homecoming: games, dances, and in some cases, parades! Vista Del Lago High School kicked off their homecoming festivities with a community parade running from Empire Oaks Elementary School to their own campus. The parade featured Vista’s drumline, cheer and dance teams, and this year’s royal court: Freshman Prince Lance Padilla and Princess Regina Bass, Sophomore Prince Terry Moody and Princess Sydney Northcutt, Junior Prince Blake Martin and Princess Amanda Gudino, and Senior King Josh Marks and Queen Kendall Maurer. Following this year’s theme of Hollywood Red Carpet Classics, each class created a special float and won awards for their creativity. The Seniors won Most Spirited with their Hunger Games float, the Juniors’ King Kong float won Crowd Favorite, the Sophomores’ Star Wars float won Most Innovative, and the Freshmen claimed Best of the Best with their Wizard of Oz float. The parade also featured Jr. Eagle football and cheer teams and Folsom Middle School Natural Helpers, representing future Vista eagles, and Eddie the Eagle, Vista’s school mascot. Vista Del Lago High School sponsored the event, which was organized by Heidi Schultz, VDLHS Activities Director; Arja Sanfilippo, Parade Coordinator; Reed Waxham, Student Director; and many generous Vista Del Lago parents and students who helped put the parade together. Explaining how the parade has evolved over the last six years and expanded beyond just the school, Arja said, “This parade has grown from a small parking lot display to a community event that so many local families look forward to.”

Aloha Fun at YPN Mega Mixer

On August 7, the Thunder Valley Casino Resort pool area hosted the Young Professionals Network of Placer County Association of Realtors’ (PCAR) Aloha Night Mega Mixer. This event raised money for PCAR’s charitable foundation, which distributes funds to various local Placer County charities every year. Last year, the Mega Mixer raised $11,000, and this year, 200 more tickets were sold and approximately $15,000 was generated from the 700 people who attended. Guests were greeted at the door with colorful Hawaiian leis, and poolside cabanas each housed a sponsor. Attendees could visit each cabana to get a special card stamped and enter to win a gift card. The sponsors also provided a gift basket giveaway. Cabana sponsors included Paramount Equity Mortgage, VITEK Mortgage Group, Lennar, Golden One Credit Union, PrimeLending, Bank of California, Republic Mortgage, Prato Real Estate, United Lending Partners, Stearns Lending, HomeSmart ICARE Realty, Sellstate Direct Real Estate, and Citibank. Thunder Valley Casino provided pool side food and beverages, and the Hawaiian mood was kept live with music from DJs Rico Rivera and Anthony James. Na Maka O Pu’uwai Aloha, a Polynesian dance school, performed a beautiful hula dance, led by instructors Janet Auwae-McCoy and Tanisha Reshke. Young Professionals Network’s Chairperson Liz Baeza organized this evening of networking and Hawaiian fun, along with nineteen other members of the Aloha Night task force.

Trojans Kick Off New Football Season

Trojans Football took it up a notch again this year at their 7th annual Meet the Trojans get together on August 9 to kick off the new season. The entire Trojan Football community with players from the junior program to the varsity team celebrated the El Dorado Hills Town Center - sponsored event. The meet showcased performances by the Jr. Trojan Football & Cheer, Oak Ridge High School Dance Team, and ORHS Cheer. Team introductions were made by Trojan Announcer Jason Allie, followed by the Walk of Fame, where Oak Ridge Football showcased its history from the beginning in the early 80s through today. Varsity players gathered around and happily signed team picture posters taken by Studio B, Benton Photography. DJ Jack Rico from Bass Theory entertained the large crowd of more than 700 guests. The excitement continued with the much anticipated hot dog eating contest sponsored by Folsom Lake Honda Folsom Lake Honda. The two-time champion freshman team went head-to-head with the JV, Varsity, and coaches team. Contenders gobbled down one hot dog after another and in the end, Nile Little-Mitchell was crowned the 2014 Champion. “We are very proud of our Football Program and are extremely privileged to have the support of an outstanding school administration, fabulous community and unrivaled parent team,” said Janet Hallare, Varsity Football Coordinator. “It takes a village and ours comes together without fail, every season!” More than 50 Oak Ridge High School Football parents volunteered support with event duties and many sponsors, including Cold Stone, Chili’s, Face in a Book, and El Dorado Hills Party Rentals, helped make this event one to remember.

Folsom Jr. Bulldogs Kick Off New Season

On August 15, the Livermore Football Field hosted the Folsom Jr. Bulldog’s Friday Night Lights Opening Ceremony event which introduced the Fall 2014 Bulldog Football and Cheer Season teams. President Mike Gaide expressed his excitement for the new season, then Vice President of Football, Corey Gaide, and Vice President of Cheer, Shellie Fujimoto, each introduced their team members. Cheerleaders Sydni Parcon and Jordan Dunn sung the National Anthem, and the Midget Cheerleading team performed a fun routine. City officials Ernie Sheldon and Andy Morin showed their support, along with a surprise visit from their colleagues Ray Robitaille and Mike Dunn. The league and the Jr. Bulldog Board rented a bounce house, giant slide, and an obstacle course from Bounce House Rentals, who offered their rentals to them at a generous discount. Event Coordinator China Martinelli reported, “[This was] our largest Friday Night Lights event ever.” Chick-fil-A Folsom donated sandwiches for dinner and had food available for purchase. Visual Sports Network's Kevin Gray volunteered his time to take a group shot of the 270 members of the Bulldog Football and Cheer teams. Tom the Barber from Tom's Barber Shop continued the tradition of shaving paw prints and numbers into boys’ hair, while Poidmore Orthodontics, Magnus Pacific, and Folsom Hills Dentistry and Orthodontics helped sponsor the ceremony. Winners of the 1st Annual Folsom Jr. Bulldog live raffle won up to $3000 in cash prizes—prizes generated by team members spending their summer selling raffle tickets. Tickets for the Jr. Bulldog Country BBQ fundraising event were sold at a discount, along with new Bulldog merchandise for the upcoming season.

New Backpacks for the New School Year!

The first day of school is always full of mixed emotions. Excited and anxious at the same time, children walk into classrooms clutching their brand new backpacks. But not every child’s family can afford a new backpack, and that’s where Twin Lakes Food Bank steps in. Their annual Back to School Backpack Give Away event helped local students start the school year off on a positive note. Serving families in Folsom, Orangevale, El Dorado Hills, and Granite Bay with children from preschool to 12th grade, they gave away 990 backpacks and supplies, plus 200 free haircut cards. The excitement was visible on the smiling faces of children receiving new backpacks filled with school supplies, socks, shoes, gift cards, healthy snacks, and even dental kits donated by local dentists. One woman in particular was moved to tears by the generosity of others to help meet her family’s needs, when she received a gift card to Payless ShoeSource followed by a free haircut coupon. “Events like this one are not just about giving out backpacks and supplies, they are about offering encouragement and hope and letting people know that this community cares about them,” said Kelli Fort, Back to School Event Coordinator and assistant to the Director. The event was made possible with the generous support of local churches, sponsors, and anonymous donations from the community. Volunteers from Micron Technology, Harbor Church, and Lakeside Church Youth Group gave of their time to support this cause and the Food Bank’s mission.
