The one to know: Porl Thompson's Roland JX-3P — the synth he played through The Cure's most important stretch.
It turns up in the 1984 TV broadcasts (The Tube with Jools Holland, Munich, Glasgow) and on The Head on the Door — the 1985 album that broke the band wide open with "In Between Days" and "Close to Me."
What makes it more than a synth: it still lives in its original Bulldog flight case. "PORL" stenciled across the front in orange. His Om-symbol logo on the lid. Road number 67 on the end. And two handwritten crew notes still taped inside, never removed. A signed letter from Porl Thompson confirms it as his.
