Library Juice Connections is seeking panelists for a webinar discussion titled, “Retired library directors tell you what they always wished they could.”

It’s based on the premise that active library directors often feel constrained from speaking out in their roles, and sometimes wish they could share their personal perspectives with staff, especially those who may be considering a path into administration themselves. We will deal with questions such as, “What is it like to represent higher-ups during difficult times? What did you wish your staff could see that is normally behind-the-scenes? What should librarians know who are considering moving into administration? What do you wish you could have done differently?”

This will be a free, hour-long webinar in which the panelists will interact with each other and take questions from the audience.

Since 2021, the editors, reviewers, and authors behind the Journal of Critical Digital Librarianship (JCDL) have attempted to foster community around cultural heritage digital library work through open access and open peer review.

JCDL’s open peer review process puts authors in direct communication with their reviewers, thereby prioritizing rigorous dialogue and respect for contributors’ time. JCDL also aims to provide a venue for intellectual projects in a variety of formats, both traditional and innovative.

In this webinar, an editor, a reviewer, a writer, and an audio producer will share their successes and challenges navigating open peer review, as well as their reflections on the direction of academic publishing in LIS.

Libraries have long had a mission to serve all our users, going back to Ranganathan’s law that states “Every reader his book.” More recently libraries have understood this mission to include ensuring their collections reflect a variety of different life experiences. Diverse collections help teach users about those different from themselves and also allow people from minoritized groups to see parts of their identity reflected. In order to know if efforts to broaden representation are working and to spur continued action, it is useful to be able to measure diversity within the collection. A growing body of work in libraries, including the presenter’s forthcoming book, is developing and sharing methods for evaluating diversity in collections. In this webinar, the presenter will provide an overview of three main methods, explaining what each one can accomplish as well as its limitations.
Participations will be able to

- Articulate reasons why both diversity and assessment matter
- Select one or more of the 3 main methods for evaluating for diversity
- Choose an appropriate scope for an assessment project
