What happened in St. Joe this week, in a nutshell:
The new Friends of the Animal Shelter of St. Joseph and St. Joseph Animal Shelter on the Belt opened Friday — more than a decade in the making. Bigger building, public tours, and $20 adoptions on Saturday.
The St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on Swope Health’s KidsCARE clinic (birth to 17: medical, dental, vision, and behavioral health).
Just across the river, Elanco finished a $120 million-plus expansion at its Elwood plant.
Christian Mengel was named the new Conventuon & Visitors Bureau director. He starts Oct. 1.
School started Tuesday. Friday night: Benton opened with a 30-14 win over Van Horn; Central fell to Staley 12-31. Thursday at Spratt, Missouri Western dropped a 63-58 shootout to Augustana.
Thursday night also brought a near-total “blood moon.”
On public safety: early Saturday, police arrested a wanted juvenile on Mitchell, issued referrals to 14 other minors, and seized five guns. That evening, an officer exchanged gunfire near Heritage Sports Complex. The officer was not hurt. The suspect fled; police asked for tips.
City Council votes Monday on the Krug Park waterfall, Civic Arena HVAC, and more work on the Felix Street garage.
