This beautifully colorized photograph brings new life to a moment captured more than a century ago—the Preparedness Parade of June 28, 1916, held right here in downtown St. Joseph.
Published originally as a Postcard of the Past in the St. Joseph News‑Press, this image shows crowds lining the streets at Eighth and Felix, gathering in a wave of patriotic spirit nearly a year before the United States entered World War I. Men in straw boaters, flags waving, and banners held high reflected a community preparing for uncertain times while standing proudly together.
Though the streetscape has changed, pieces of this history remain. The southwest corner building still stands, along with the full row of structures on the south side of Felix between Seventh and Eighth. The north side—once filled with storefronts and spectators—is now Coleman Hawkins Park, a space where the city continues to gather.
Moments like this remind us how St. Joseph has always shown up—with unity, resilience, and pride.
