“There are still good things in this community. When you ask, what’s good, I think of the support for foster kids and families. I’ve never seen anything like it. It makes me feel hopeful, the way we take care of them. And when you live in this community, people adopt you as family. I wouldn’t be meeting any of you without him always approaching me and saying hey and asking me my name. That’s how I got to come and sit here with you all. I love this community”.

A story shared at our recent Pull Up.

“Oh they working on the bus system but they working on it for people who just started living here and not for those of us who’ve made this city what it is. And I ain’t mad at that. I just want them to think about me, about us, like they think bout them. I mean look over there. Those new condos, they not for me. They for people who comin from other places that pay em better. Sooner or later, you won’t even recognize this place. All them photos you taken, they gon sell for a lot because they gon be pictures of what was.” - Methodist Town Resident

shared with us the impact of a story from a resident at Bay Wax Inn:

“Over the last few months, I've had the opportunity to listen to many residents in St. Petersburg. One story that really stuck with me is that of a man in his early 30s who, along with his family, was forced out of their home. They've been living in a hotel for the past six months, and it has completely changed the dynamic of their lives. It's heartbreaking to see how hard he is working to provide for his family, but the issues of affordable housing and access to resources like transportation and healthy food make it nearly impossible. However, what gives me hope is the tight-knit community in the hotel where he lives - everyone looks out for each other. It's a reminder that, with the support of our communities and changes to systems and policies, we can make a difference. And it's the little things, like the joy on his daughter's face, that remind us of the love that can sustain us through the toughest of times.”

St. Pete Resident Lamar was asked several questions on his thoughts about St. Pete and how to progress in the overall right direction. Lamar steered the conversation towards his feelings on crime in our city. He thinks crime in underserved areas isn't being handled well. He believes there should be more police presence to deter bad behavior, and that the community needs to speak up about what's happening in their neighborhoods "How is it that so many houses where people sell drugs still exist?" He also touched on the issue of systemic racism and the way it's perceived in these neighborhoods. Lamar emphasized the importance of personal responsibility and overcoming the mindset of feeling owed something from others "we are our biggest enemy because we can get out of our own way when it comes to what we should be doing."

“CITY OF GREEN BENCHES”

Our uncommon city was once known as the "City of Green Benches." Throughout the 1900's the total of benches placed all across the city was nearly 3,500. While these benches became a visual staple of St. Petersburg, the hope of community, rest, and social engagement provided by the benches was not afforded to all our citizens. Segregation banned any residents or tourists of color from enjoying the same luxury afforded to the rest of St. Pete's population.

In the years and decades since the abolishment of segregation, the city and many citizens have strode and sacrificed in order to pursue racial and cultural reconciliation. What once marked and reminded us of inequality, now is a symbol that we have reclaimed to mark the promise of progress towards unity in our city.

“It is our intent to ring in a new era of the Green Bench, where the original spirit and purpose of the benches is truly available to all. And while we cannot change the past, we believe it is imperative to acknowledge our shortcomings as a society and a community. To not shield ourselves from it; to discuss it and feel it, and together move toward a more unifying future.”

Preston moved from Boulder, Colorado were the median home value is OVER $1,000,000 to the Childs Park area were the median home value is about $250,000.

He referenced that St. Petersburg is becoming a haven because it is very easy to be priced out of some other places that aren't as appealing.

He did speak to the crime in the area and believes that if the crime didn't exist there would be an even greater boom. He said, people can look at a crime map and think an area isn't safe, even if those crimes are individual home related (like domestic) issues.

As gentrification came up, he brought up two lines of thought: One, having people move out and then moving another race in is NOT good. The other, there aren’t ENOUGH people who are investing into communities in need.

Welcome Preston to one of the most uncommon cities in the nation… The Burg

St. Pete Resident, Aaron Ward is one of our listeners who has gathered several stories from the Childs Park Neighborhood. As a transplant, his experience provided substantial insight to the deep struggles of everyday people who live in our uncommon city. He would gather stories of St. Petians’ by simply walking throughout the neighborhood speaking to homeowners and to those who are homeless. There seemed to be a strong commonality in his listenings:

1. Higher Paying Jobs
2. Safety
3. Lack of Social Activities

We thought #3 (lack of social activities) might sound peculiar but it speaks volumes of what our neighbors desire… to feel a sense of community.

Listening Project

This is Joe,

Joe is a pastor who has lived in the same house on the same block in the Childs Park community of St. Petersburg for 40 years. Within that time he has witnessed an immense amount of transformation on Queensboro Avenue. In his words “the neighborhood has gone from good to bad and now on the positive incline back to good.”

When we asked Pastor Joe what community meant to him he responded with ”being able to come home and not worry about anyone in your neighborhood disrespecting your property.“ Oddly enough there was a police cruiser parked at an adjacent home. Joe stated at this point he is used to it. He stated that the neighborhood used to be a place where everybody knew everything that was going on with everybody else, but now every home is an “island.” When he sees something that is out of place he is one of the few people who report or talk about issues, but a lot of people who live in the Childs Park neighborhood are just trying to make it everyday. They don't have time to worry about other people's problems. Although, Pastor Joe continues to live in this neighborhood he misses the days in which he knew his neighbors.

Oh what a night! We explored embodied creativity with some in our arts community at last night!

Really blessed to have received a micro grant as well from the to help continue the work!

Thank you for the invitation to be a part of this special night and to for space to share what it could look like if WE were the directors and writers of our own narratives. Powerful.
