Fort Leonard Wood update

(FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo.) The General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital has reported 12 cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease across the 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, officials announced Monday, Aug. 18, 2025. Those who have been diagnosed are being treated by medical professionals at GLWACH, they said.

HFMD is a common viral illness that usually causes fever, a sore throat, mouth sores and a skin rash commonly found on the hands and feet. It is transmitted by close personal contact or through contact with contaminated objects and surfaces.

To help reduce the spread of HFMD, the 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment has implemented cleaning procedures in their barracks, dining facility and other common areas and provided hand sanitizer stations throughout their area. Personnel are also receiving updated information on HFMD prevention and symptoms.

Although HFMD is most commonly found in children under five years old, it is not unheard of in adults. Despite its name, most people have mild symptoms that require minimal or no medical treatment, GLWACH officials said. HFMD commonly occurs in the summer and fall in the United States, but it can still be spread and contracted at any time of year, they said.

Officials ask that the community follow the following steps to reduce the spread of this illness:

- Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, often.
- Disinfect frequently touched surfaces and items.
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid sharing personal items.
- Avoid close contact with sick people.
- Cover nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing (use a disposable tissue, upper sleeve or elbow).

Individuals who believe they may be showing symptoms should contact their primary care physician or contact GLWACH at (573) 596-0518. Early detection and reporting are vital to managing the situation effectively.

NEWS: We have confirmed a rare brain infection in a Missourian caused by an ameba (also spelled amoeba) called Naegleria fowleri. The infection is known as primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) - it is not contagious, but it is deadly. The patient is being treated in the ICU.

The source of the patient’s exposure is currently being investigated by public health officials. While not confirmed, preliminary information implies the patient may have been participating in water activities at the Lake of the Ozarks days before becoming ill. Recreational water users should assume that Naegleria fowleri is present in any warm freshwater across the U.S.; however, infection remains extremely rare.

The ameba is commonly found in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds; however, PAM is extremely rare. Between 1962 and 2024, there were 167 reported cases of PAM in the United States. The only other cases among Missouri residents were in 1987 and 2022.

Although rare, infection can occur when water containing Naegleria fowleri enters through the nose from freshwater. The ameba travels up the nose to the brain where it destroys brain tissue. It is important to remember that this infection isn't contagious and can't be contracted by swallowing water.
