It’s true that wisdom comes with age. I think that’s because humiliation…I mean humility (😂) can be a result of youth and inexperience. So we learn better ways to do things when we try it “our own way” and it doesn’t work out.
At the women’s retreat I attended a couple weeks ago with , I really enjoyed a teaching by Brooke ‘s friend Liz, on the power of daily routines.
If you know anything about my life you know how hard it is for me to adhere to a routine because so many variables come into play with that special needs mama life.
BUT if everything is figure-out-able then I can find little ways to create routines and habits that will set me up for success.
As I’ve gotten older & wiser, I’ve learned to appreciate these little routines.
However, that was not always the case. Similarly to what Liz shared in her teaching on the retreat, I used to feel rebellious when I felt the heavy hand of routine and structure trying to control me. I just couldn’t be fully me - fully free with these super-imposed regulations draining the life out of me.
I’m a born and bred all American southern girl - of course I’m obsessed with freedom, duh.
But what I didn’t realize for so much of my life is that structure isn’t stifling. It’s liberating. And by rejecting structure, routine, discipline (you know, all those dirty works, lol) I was building my own prison of failure all while carving on the walls of my cell, “at least I’m free.”
Ouch.
Thankfully, little by little - or I should say - with each new routine or structure I‘ve embraced, I’m breaking free of the lies that would seek to keep me imprisoned. In other words, I’m renewing my mind. I’m forging new neural pathways in my brain (i.e. breaking free from strongholds for my charismatic friends).
Liz’s advice was to start simple with something offensively small, like making your bed. So if you find yourself struggling in an area, and you aren’t sure why, or what to do, try establishing an offensively small routine. And let me know how it goes! It’s truly worked wonders for me!
You’re amazing and powerful and I love you!
