BEDFORD, Indiana — A Lawrence County man is facing an attempted murder charge after investigators say he repeatedly stabbed another man during an attack that began inside a Bedford home.
William E. Melvin II, 65, of Bedford, was charged Sept. 30 with attempted murder, aggravated battery and battery with a deadly weapon, according to online court records.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Bedford police were called to the area of 17th and G streets around 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, on a report of a man who had been stabbed multiple times.
Officers found the man with several stab wounds, including to his shoulder, back and face.
Investigators wrote in court documents the victim identified Melvin as the person who stabbed him and told officers Melvin had left the area.
A witness told officers he was driving through the area when he saw Melvin chasing the victim, according to court documents. The witness said he intervened, causing Melvin to leave the area.
Officers found Melvin nearby with a knife stuck in his abdomen, and he was treated at a hospital and later interviewed, according to the affidavit.
The victim was taken to a Bedford hospital, then flown to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
According to court documents, Melvin told investigators the victim stabbed him first during a struggle inside the home and he used the knife against him. But the victim denied ever having a knife and told investigators Melvin stabbed him after asking for help retrieving a pill bottle.
The victim told police he ran from the home because he thought Melvin was trying to kill him.
Investigators recovered a hunting-style knife they believe was used in the stabbing, according to court documents. Melvin was arrested, and online court records do not yet indicate an initial hearing in the case.
