For the first time in 33 years, San Antonio is moving toward a property tax-rate increase.
City Manager Erik Walsh presented the FY2027 budget Thursday: $4.4 billion overall, a $1.76 billion general fund, and a $157.7 million shortfall projected through FY28.
The plan to close it:
— $90.2M in new property-tax revenue: a 3.9% rate increase now, with another 4.4% already assumed for next year
— $89.6M in “reductions,” though by the city’s own breakdown, $29M of that shifts costs to other funds or books a new parks fee as a cut
— $30.4M in higher fees, from EMS calls to non-resident library cards
Thursday’s 8–3 vote set the ceiling, not the final rate. Alderete Gavito, Spears, and Whyte voted to prevent a tax increase.
