Hello everyone! A little (long) update on Dandy Lion and her crew…
Things are going well. Mama is eating a drinking well, and the puppies are enthusiastic sucklers who seem to be in fine health. Dandy is very emaciated, so we asked some experienced rescuers at the Animal Defense League adoption center at PetSmart if they had any suggestions for a whelping mom in her condition. Based on our research and their recommendations, we will be starting her on Hill’s Science Diet Large Breed Puppy kibble that is supplemented with Purina Pro Plan High Protein canned food. We also picked up some vitamins to make sure she’s getting everything she needs and a probiotic supplement to help with her bowels. A local rescue generously shipped us a bottle of postnatal supplements, as well, so we will switch from the vitamins to those when they arrive.
We will be having Dandy and her litter seen by a veterinarian as soon as she can be seen, but she is currently doing well and decompressing.
Someone generously sent us a whelping pool, which should arrive tomorrow, and some washable potty pads from their Amazon wishlist…that will be a huge help! Thank you!
While mama is decompressing, we’re trying not to disturb her by handling her puppies too often. Because they came from ACS, they will be strictly quarantined in addition to no-feet-on-the-ground puppy protocol. We will try to take individual puppy pictures, but our priority is the safety and comfort of mama and her litter.
The good news is that the puppies’ eyes and ears are just now opening up, so they’ve been largely oblivious to the chaos their lives started out in. They are absolutely beautiful pups, and I haven’t known them long enough to be biased, so you can trust me on that 😉
