R.I.P. Tim Curry, Legendary Rocky Horror Star, Dies at 80

Tim Curry, the unforgettable singer and actor whose electrifying portrayal of Dr. Frank-N-Furter turned The Rocky Horror Picture Show into a cultural phenomenon, has died at the age of 80. Curry passed away at his home in Los Angeles, bringing to a close an extraordinary career spanning more than five decades across music, theatre, film and television.

Curry first created Frank-N-Furter onstage in the original London production of The Rocky Horror Show in 1973, before immortalizing the character on screen in the 1975 film. With his commanding voice, theatrical swagger and fearless performance, Curry became the heart of a movie that initially struggled at the box office but found a second life through midnight screenings, eventually becoming one of cinema's greatest cult phenomena. Songs such as “Sweet Transvestite” became inseparable from Curry and helped give Rocky Horror an enduring place in rock and musical history.

His talents extended far beyond Frank-N-Furter. Curry began his professional stage career in Hair, released three solo studio albums—Read My Lips, Fearless and Simplicity—and later became unforgettable to generations of viewers through Clue, Legend, It, Home Alone 2 and countless other roles. After suffering a major stroke in 2012, he continued working and remained connected with his fans. Few performers possessed a voice, presence and personality quite like his. Rest in peace, Tim Curry.
