Introducing Jessie Metcalf! Jessie is currently a sophomore and an assistant editor for The Contemporary. We asked what she thought of The Contemporary and here is her response: “I think it’s awesome that we publish specifically collegiate journalism. I think that’s a really cool lens to see issues through, and I think it’s awesome that we are, or that we try to be, a non-partisan and original publication.”

As the end of this year is approaching, we are having to say goodbye to some of our members but we have also gained some great new people! Jake Exler is currently a freshman and works for The Contemporary as an assistant editor.

We asked Jake what the relationship between student journalists and their community is. Here’s his response: “I think that [the role of student journalists] definitely connects students to their local communities. I think a lot of the time there have been issues with colleges not being connected to their communities, or not being connected to the cities that they’re in, and I think it’s great for students to get to know their local community more, and also for the community to have that interaction with the students.”

As always, we need your support so that we can continue to work with great people like Jake and produce in-depth articles discussing important issues. To donate, please follow this link: https://bit.ly/1IP64hr, select “Give to an area of my choice” and search for “The Contemporary.”

We asked former Managing Editor Jennifer Jussel why she thinks it is important for communities to support student led endeavors in journalism. Here is her response: “Journalism isn’t really possible without community, especially at The Contemporary. We’re reporting on real world issues, real people, and real communities who deserve to have their stories told and the world made aware of the issues there facing. Journalism is an attempt to inform, but especially with The Contemporary, it’s also an attempt to help. We give back to our communities when we let them be heard, raise awareness for their struggles and their strengths, and encourage others to help. We really try to give back what is given to us, but especially for students, we have to ask for support in order to be viable and successful.”

It is hard to believe that The Contemporary started only a few short years ago. We're grateful to the readers, mentors, and donors that have helped us grow. As we pass this organization to the next generation of journalists and entrepreneurs, we are working to raise more resources to continue our efforts.

If you believe in our mission to help young reporters fill the gap left by declining local newspapers and the importance of deep reporting on critical issues, please consider donating to The Contemporary.
