As we jump into August and the heat of the summer really starts to show up our crops selection gets tighter. Our salad and greens mix switches into the hot summer mix which is always a mix of arugula, Mizuna, Tokyo cabbage and other greens. Peppers and okra produce but sometimes slow a bit. Tomatoes are just about done for the summer but we more going in for fall. Microgreens maintain production, eggs keep coming in, despite the rising temps.
Even with the heat, it’s great to still be able to have nice full tables at the markets.

The heat is on for now but soon we will all be planting and preparing for fall. I cannot freaking wait.

Cantaloupe 🍈 Microgreens 🌱
Beautiful melon and cucumber flavor with a nice finish. Great for all courses and styles of food. Add it to salads, garnish a plate or top a dessert. Your choice.

Tomatoes now, vs where this plot started in early November on

The ground was stripped, we cut out mesquite, pulled weeds and moved literally tons of rocks out. Then the whole plot was Broadforked in two day. Rows were formed, landscape fabric set in place and compost was generously applied to each row. Some crops have been transplanted and some direct seeded.

The tomatoes 🍅 were grown from seed in 72 cell windstrip trays from and transplanted directly into the ground and into landscape fabric.

I use drip irrigation for them and the compost was made right here on Talking Tree Farm.

The first couple of clusters have formed and are ripening and we should be harvesting soon.

Soon these tomatoes will be to the tops of the trellises. Looking forward to some fresh tomatoes 🍅
