RIP Bobby Whitlock (1948–2025) 🎹💔
Today we say goodbye to Bobby Whitlock, the soulful voice and keyboardist who helped shape one of rock’s most iconic albums — Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs with Derek and the Dominos. He passed away this morning, August 10, 2025, at the age of 77, after a brief battle with cancer.
From his early days as the first white artist signed to Stax Records, to his time with Delaney & Bonnie, to co-writing classics like Bell Bottom Blues, Tell the Truth, and Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?, Bobby poured his heart into every note. His song Thorn Tree in the Garden closed out the Layla album with haunting beauty.
He went on to release solo albums, play on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, and later, record and tour with his wife CoCo Carmel.
Eric Clapton said it best today: “Our dear friend Bobby Whitlock has passed away at 77… RIP Bobby ###.”
Rest in music, Bobby. Your songs will live forever. 🎶
