They called it “the change of life.” My mother and her sisters whispered about it while fanning themselves with dish towels and magazines. They joked about the hot flashes, the forgetfulness, and the exhaustion, and as a teenager in the nineties, that was, in truth, the extent of my education on menopause.

Even as a physician, with years of training in anatomy, physiology, and behavioral health, I had only gathered a few extra pieces of the puzzle. It wasn’t until my passion for women’s mental health deepened that I recognized the glaring gap in our understanding of women’s well-being: menopause. ‼️IMPORTANT: In the wake of the continued federal government shutdown and the recent announcement that the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will not be funded for early November, Eric Cooper, President and CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank, is preparing to do everything possible to meet the food needs of individuals and households impacted by the federal shutdown.

The San Antonio Food Bank anticipates it may need 50% more food, compared to normal weeks, to meet the growth in need it will see in the coming weeks. This is equivalent to needing an extra 12-13 tractor-trailer loads of food, on top of the 25 loads of food it is already putting into the community in a given week.

Cooper notes, “We will do whatever is required of us, even emptying the warehouse if that is what is needed. But, going big will also mean everyone will need to help: volunteers, financial donors, and food donors. We can do this San Antonio.”

Individuals needing food and other support can find help at: www.safoodbank.org/help/

Those wanting to give help can find ways to donate or volunteer at: www.safoodbank.org/ways-to-help/

When two people come together to build a new life, they bring more than memories—they bring their own styles, histories, and cherished belongings.
