Former Bexar County District Attorney Nico LaHood joins Cedric Fisher on San Antonio's INFLUENCE Magazine Show for a raw, powerful conversation about redemption, faith, and servant leadership. In this compelling interview, LaHood shares his incredible journey from being arrested for selling drugs at 22 to becoming San Antonio's top prosecutor at 42, offering hope to anyone seeking transformation.
LaHood opens up about deeply personal experiences including losing his brother Michael to murder, finding faith through intellectual exploration of Christianity, and raising a son with autism. As a father of four and husband of 19 years, he discusses how family tragedy and personal challenges shaped his approach to justice, leadership, and life.
The conversation explores LaHood's unique perspective on the justice system through his interpretation of Lady Justice symbolism, his transition from managing 500+ employees as District Attorney to running a boutique criminal defense firm with 14 attorneys, and his commitment to teaching at police academies. He shares insights on servant leadership, the importance of character over reputation, and why he believes in training children to be "dangerous" - formidable in faith, critical thinking, and self-defense.
LaHood also reveals his health journey, including beating cancer through holistic methods and his deep dive into nutrition and longevity. Throughout the interview, he emphasizes the role of his Christian faith, the power of perseverance, and why he's chosen to remain in San Antonio despite opportunities in larger markets.
This episode offers valuable lessons for anyone interested in leadership, redemption, criminal justice reform, special needs parenting, or faith-based transformation. LaHood's authentic, no-nonsense approach and willingness to share both triumphs and failures makes this a must-watch conversation.

Beautiful artwork and scenery from our visit with the Eye of the Beholder and Maria!

Join host Cedric Fisher as he welcomes back Maria Hazelwood Williams, founder of "In the Eye of the Beholder" Art Gallery, for an inspiring conversation about art, advocacy, and cultural representation in San Antonio. In this special return appearance on San Antonio's INFLUENCE Magazine show, Maria shares her transformative journey from running a successful event planning business for 25 years to becoming San Antonio's leading advocate for Black fine art.
Located in the historic St. Paul Square—once the vibrant hub of San Antonio's African-American community—Maria's gallery stands as a beacon of representation for artists who have historically lacked exhibition opportunities. With her unique multicultural perspective shaped by her Cuban mother, Panamanian father, and upbringing across military bases including Germany, Maria brings a global vision to local art curation.
Discover how Maria coined the term "artivist" to describe her role as both artist advocate and activist, learn about her innovative Art of Four Initiative that has grown from 40 to 50 artists, and understand why she believes exposing children to art is crucial for their development. Maria shares powerful insights about how art serves as both personal expression and historical documentation, following Paul Robeson's philosophy that artists are the true historians of their time.
The conversation reveals Maria's thoughtful approach to artist selection, her commitment to supporting living artists, and exciting upcoming events including Sounds of Soufflé featuring Andrea Vocab on September 13th and the San Antonio Black International Film Festival on October 2nd. Maria also discusses her recent selection to curate "Mujeres Hermosas de Vida" (Beautiful Women of Life), honoring the influential women in her life.
Whether you're an art enthusiast, aspiring artist, or community leader, this episode offers valuable insights into building cultural institutions, creating opportunities for underrepresented artists, and the vital role art galleries play in thriving communities.
