Wolves can lower their heart rate and slip into an almost energy saving mode when food is scarce, allowing them to survive long stretches without eating while still traveling dozens of miles across frozen terrain.
In winter they also grow a dense insulating underfur so effective that snow can rest on their backs without melting because their body heat does not escape easily. Even more fascinating, each wolfâs howl has a unique acoustic signature, meaning pack members can recognize who is calling from miles away, almost like hearing a familiar voice in the dark forest.
