If you have ever gotten a notification that your email was found on the dark web and had no idea what to do about it, this one is for you.
In today's bonus episode, I break down what the dark web actually is, walk through three common myths that the news gets completely wrong, and give you five practical steps you can take today. Including a free breach lookup tool that I tested on my own accounts, and what I found when I did.
The name sounds like a thriller. The reality is a lot more manageable.

Have you ever gotten a notification that your email was found on the dark web?
Most people either panic, ignore it, or have absolutely no idea what to do with that information. And the headlines are not helping.
This Tuesday on Your Tech Makeover, I am dropping a bonus episode all about the dark web: what it actually is, what those notifications really mean, and why the real risk for most people is a lot less dramatic than the news makes it sound. I will also walk through five practical steps you can actually take to protect your accounts, starting with a free tool that takes about 30 seconds to use.
If someone you know has been nervous about this stuff, this one is worth sharing.

In case you missed it last week, I covered something that comes up every summer: public Wi-Fi safety.
The short version? It is not as scary as the headlines suggest, but it is not as safe as your home network either. Five simple habits close the gap. Worth a listen before your next trip.

Public Wi-Fi is not as dangerous as the headlines suggest. But a few specific things you might do on it can put your accounts at real risk, and most people have no idea where that line is.
In this week's Your Tech Makeover, I walk through the honest version: what the real threats are, what HTTPS encryption changed, and five habits that keep you safe when you connect away from home.

Ever wonder what's actually happening when you connect to airport or hotel Wi-Fi? Not the scary version. Not the "don't worry about it" version. The honest version.
In this episode of Your Tech Makeover, I walk through the two real threats on public networks, explain how HTTPS encryption changed the game, and give you five simple habits to protect yourself when connecting away from home.
You don't have to avoid public Wi-Fi entirely. You just have to know what to do and what to skip.

You're at the airport. Two-hour delay. Free Wi-Fi is right there.
Most of what you do on your phone is completely fine on public Wi-Fi. But a few things aren't, and most people have no idea where that line is.
Coming up on Your Tech Makeover, I'm walking through the honest version of public Wi-Fi safety: what's actually at risk, what gets exaggerated, and the simple habits that keep your accounts safe whether you're at an airport, a hotel, or your favorite coffee shop.

In case you missed it last week, I did an episode on QR code scams and how to scan safely.
The short version: QR codes are genuinely useful, but you cannot read one before you scan it. That is the gap scammers are exploiting with fake parking meter stickers, fraudulent legal notices, and phony messages designed to steal login credentials or install malware on your phone. A two-second habit before you tap is really all it takes to stay safe.
