URGENT: Dauphin Island Votes to Eradicate Foxes
The Dauphin Island Town Council has voted to eradicate the red foxes on the island’s west end. This means Roxy, her kits, and the other foxes living there could be trapped and euthanized.
Officials say this is to protect sea turtles and shorebirds. The decision is also tied to conservation funding from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement, which supports bird and habitat management on the island. Critics argue that if grant money requires eliminating foxes, then the plan itself should be reconsidered or modified to include humane protections.
If cage traps cannot be used, the alternative could be leg traps, devices known to cause extreme suffering.
Wildlife photographer Spence Harrison, who has documented Roxy for years, said:
“Roxy is an icon and an ambassador to the island. People that come here in the early mornings might see her standing over by the dunes. Fishermen on the beach know her well because she’ll stand next to them like a great blue heron will and look for a handout.”
Beth Cowan Drake of Alabama the Beautiful also condemned the decision, saying:
“Waking up to devastating news this morning. The Dauphin Island town council voted last night to eradicate the small family of red foxes living on the west end of Dauphin Island. And get this… it was decided in the name of conservation in order to save millions in grant money Dauphin Island receives to protect animals. It doesn’t make any sense! If the grant doesn’t protect these rare beautiful foxes on Dauphin Island then somebody needs to modify the grant!”
What You Can Do
Please call today. Let leaders know that while protecting sea turtles and birds is important, killing foxes and using inhumane traps is not the answer.
