I’m not going to go on an angry rant, but I want to remind you reasons why you have to pay your photographers in more than exposure, and understand why they have their pricing reasons.
I am at fault for taking recent low to no paying gigs as I am trying to regroup things for hopefully life outside of a 9-5 job in the news. Right now I AM at a gig that has a lot of money on the line and I am experiencing a mechanical error in the lens I spent ten years scraping as many pennies as possible to purchase. It’s my main lens and my best lens. Now I have to potentially wait 6+ weeks for a potentially costly repair on this lens if not maybe buy another one outright.
Though your processing and storage of the camera is digital, there’s still a heavy mechanical element to photography and filmmmaking. You wouldn’t make your friends or family drive you an hour to work everyday and not pay them when their car breaks down would you? I hope not.
Please, please, please pay your photographers and understand their budgeting. They’re not just overcharging you. If you can’t afford them don’t hire them. From here on out no freebies. I’m charging whoever, and if you think you can take better photos, then by all means save the money.
