As you may know, I spent many years dissecting and training people for moments much like yesterday. In my book, I talk about the human as a system in order to understand how to train and develop it to take the actions you will need to take in a moment of crisis or chaos.
I have started working on an analysis of yesterday’s events through my lens, but for now, I’ll share one of the foundational methodologies I developed about 20 years ago now… The Operational Lifecycle.
I used this as a road map to understand where someone is or was in a particular moment during particular events, where disruption occurred or might occur and how to effectively and efficiently navigate the events as they unfold.
The first break in performance consistently presents as a lack of “intentionality,” meaning:
A lackluster approach to the situation
A fracture in the perception of in abilities
A disconnection from the present conditions
A closed mind to what is possible
Or a low level dysregulation, meaning your internal state does not match the external conditions.
I believe there are many important things to learn from yesterday, not just about the Secret Service or Law Enforcement, not just about President Trump, and not just about the circumstances that brought us to this point.
No, I have a deep concern over the response and reaction of the crowd during and after the event.
Our SAFE Mechanisms have been so corrupted over time that to sit still, drinking a soda, yards away from where a person was just shot, is beyond my scope of normalization.
It’s very easy to now say, “oh, I would have…” and while you may have, my money says otherwise.
If you don’t consider the possibilities and have not run a mental model on the What if’s, What then, and What now, then you are vulnerable.
Happy Sunday!
