A new "living plastic" eats itself completely from the inside out in just six days. 🧬♻️

Researchers embedded dormant spores of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis into polycaprolactone, a polymer used in 3D printing and surgical sutures. When triggered by a warm nutrient broth at 122 degrees Fahrenheit, the spores activated and released two cooperative enzymes. One enzyme chopped the long polymer chains into fragments; the second broke those fragments all the way down to basic building blocks. Because both enzymes worked in sequence, the process was thorough enough to prevent any microplastic particles from forming at all.

This is the first system to fully degrade plastic on command without toxic residue, pointing toward packaging and wearable devices designed with built-in self-disposal.

Not every light bulb screws into every lamp, and the difference comes down to millimeters. 💡🔩
E26 is the standard screw base across North America, a medium Edison screw measuring 26mm across, while E12 is its smaller cousin at just 12mm, built specifically for delicate decorative fixtures like chandeliers and sconces where a full-size bulb would look oversized. GU10 skips screwing entirely, using two pins spaced 10mm apart that twist and lock into place, common in halogen and LED spotlights.

B22 takes yet another approach, a bayonet base that pushes in and twists to lock, standard across the UK and much of the Commonwealth. Here's the regional catch, E26 and the European E27 are nearly identical in size and often interchangeable, but E26 runs on 120V while E27 can run up to 240V, so forcing the wrong one into the wrong socket is a real electrical risk, not just a fit issue.

Pepsi made a clear cola. Coca-Cola made a worse one on purpose. It worked. 💀🥤

In 1992, PepsiCo launched Crystal Pepsi, a caffeine-free clear cola made by swapping caramel color for modified food starch. It captured 1% of the U.S. soft drink market in its first year, worth roughly $474 million. Then Coca-Cola launched Tab Clear on December 14, 1992, branding it as a diet drink and shelving it next to Crystal Pepsi. Coke's own CMO Sergio Zyman later admitted in print it was a deliberate kamikaze strategy to drag both products down together. By the end of 1993, Crystal Pepsi's share had halved and production stopped.

The myth is that it failed because consumers expect cola to be brown. The real story is corporate sabotage, a taste that confused people, and a product with no clear reason to exist beyond novelty.

Living bacteria can now do the job of a silicon transistor, and MIT just proved it. 🦠⚡

MIT researchers engineered bacteria to function as transistors, the on/off switches at the heart of every computer. Instead of electric current, these biological circuits use small signaling molecules to carry information between colonies printed onto agar in a Petri dish. The team built two types of bacterial transistors and three relay strains, giving them five modular building blocks that can be wired together to perform nearly any logic operation.

One day these living circuits could coat plant roots or leaves, sensing drought or pest attacks and triggering a response like releasing a fungicide on the spot.

A material long dismissed as nonmagnetic just revealed a secret when sliced down to a few atoms thin. 🧲⚡

Rice University physicist Ming Yi and collaborators found that ruthenium dioxide, previously considered nonmagnetic in bulk form, displays spin patterns consistent with altermagnetism when grown as an ultrathin film only about 2 nanometers thick. The key trigger is lattice strain: growing the film on titanium dioxide forces the crystal structure to stretch slightly, which reshapes the material's electronic behavior. Without that strain, no magnetic signal appears. The findings were published in Science Advances.

Altermagnetism combines properties of both major magnet types and could lead to smaller, faster, and more efficient computer RAM with far less heat waste.

Plastic bottles, bags, and dashboards can now become clean fuel without any sorting first. ♻️⚡
Researchers at UCLA and Ewha Womans University demonstrated a method called alkaline thermal treatment (ATT) that converts mixed PET, PE, and PP plastic waste into hydrogen gas exceeding 90% purity inside a single reactor. The process runs at temperatures 300 to 400 degrees Celsius below conventional gasification, and instead of venting CO2, it locks carbon away as a stable solid mineral. More than 75% of the plastic's original carbon ends up captured rather than released.

Only 9% of plastic is currently recycled. This process skips the sorting step that stalls most recycling and turns the other 91% into a usable clean fuel.

A San Francisco company sold hundreds of thousands of uranium-lined ceramic jugs as home health springs. ☢️🪣

The Radium Ore Revigator Company marketed their glazed earthenware crock as a perpetual health spring in the home. Users filled the jar nightly with tap water, which absorbed radon gas released by the carnotite uranium ore lining, then drank six or more glasses daily. The jar sold in the hundreds of thousands between 1924 and the mid-1930s. Here is the myth-bust: later scientific analysis by a Mount St. Mary's University team working with NIST found the radiation dose was relatively low. The real killers were chemical. Arsenic leached into the water at 44 micrograms per liter, more than four times the EPA limit of 10 micrograms per liter, and vanadium concentrations also exceeded safe drinking water thresholds. The American Medical Association called out the product publicly in 1925. Regulatory pressure from the FDA, armed with the expanded powers of the 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act, ended the radium water business.

The Revigator is now a museum piece at the Smithsonian and the National Museum of Nuclear Science. Its uranium ore lining remains just as radioactive today as it was a century ago.

This slimy sea creature eaten raw in Korea and Japan just gave aging mice their memories back. 🧠🌊

Researchers from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Stanford University, and partner institutions fed compounds from edible sea squirts to 16-month-old mice for two months. The compounds, called plasmalogens, are fats naturally found in the human brain, heart, and immune cells but decline sharply with age. Treated mice navigated memory mazes far better than untreated aged mice, grew thicker and darker fur, and showed more synaptic connections in the brain, with reduced neuroinflammation.

Plasmalogen loss is linked to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. These animal results could point toward a dietary path for slowing cognitive aging in humans.
