A new "living plastic" eats itself completely from the inside out in just six days. 🧬♻️
Researchers embedded dormant spores of the bacterium Bacillus subtilis into polycaprolactone, a polymer used in 3D printing and surgical sutures. When triggered by a warm nutrient broth at 122 degrees Fahrenheit, the spores activated and released two cooperative enzymes. One enzyme chopped the long polymer chains into fragments; the second broke those fragments all the way down to basic building blocks. Because both enzymes worked in sequence, the process was thorough enough to prevent any microplastic particles from forming at all.
This is the first system to fully degrade plastic on command without toxic residue, pointing toward packaging and wearable devices designed with built-in self-disposal.
