President Donald Trump has ordered the Department of Defense to draw up a plan for tearing the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System and Advanced Weapons Elevators out of the still-under-construction aircraft carrier Doris Miller (CVN-81) and replacing them with the steam catapults and hydraulic elevators the Navy retired a generation ago.

The order revives a fight Trump has waged with the Navy's carrier engineers since his first term. He complained publicly as far back as 2017 that the electromagnetic system installed aboard the lead ship of the class, USS Gerald R. Ford, was too complicated, telling reporters during a shipboard visit that operators would have "to be Albert Einstein to figure it out" and, in a separate interview, that the system was "not good" and lacked the "power" of the steam catapults it replaced.

Brig. Gen. Matt Ross, JIATF-401's director, framed the effort against a threat picture that both the department and outside analysts describe as accelerating.

"The proliferation of small systems and small drones and the threat that they pose both to critical infrastructure and to defense-critical assets requires us to move faster in this space. In order to address this threat, we are expanding the counter-UAS marketplace to allow us to share best practices and equipment globally."

The United States Space Force (USSF) has launched a high-stakes, temporary recruiting strategy. From July 1, 2026, to November 30, 2026, the service is implementing a temporary Initial Enlistment Bonus (IEB) Pilot Program, offering a cash incentive of $25,000 to incoming Guardians.

The program is capped at a maximum of 100 enlisted entries, and recruits must commit to an eight-year active-duty service contract. The pilot program is designed to enhance operational readiness and to provide a return on investment in technical training. On the other hand, for potential recruits, this bonus is not free money. To secure the funds, recruits must successfully meet the standards and finish the service term obligation or face mandatory, pro-rated financial recoupment of the unearned funds.
