A history lesson they never taught you in school.✊🏽🇲🇽

The athlete with less somehow accomplished more.

On paper, college me had everything I needed to be successful. I was a D1 athlete on scholarship with access to facilities, athletic trainers, treatment, covered travel, and an entire program built around my sport.

Post-collegiate, I have significantly fewer resources. Im unsponsored, don’t have training partners, zero access to an athletic trainer, and self funded.

But two things changed for me after college: my training and my mindset.

I found a coach who actually took the time to understand the athlete I was. We identified my weaknesses and developed them, while continuing to emphasize the strengths that made me ME! Instead of simply training harder, I started training in a way that made sense for my body and my event.

I slowly started enjoying the sport again.

Running stopped feeling like something I had to do and became something I was choosing to do.

What I Did to Improve my Steady - State runs‼️👇🏽

Journey to LA28: Day 192/850🙏🏽

1) I developed my max speed.
The faster my top end speed became, the less demanding slower paces felt. Improving my speed gave me a bigger “speed reserve,” so 6:30 pace became a smaller percentage of what I was physically capable of.

2) I incorporated more plyometrics.
Plyos helped me become more explosive, reactive, and efficient with every stride. Meaning I could run faster while using less energy at a given pace.
Better bounce + better mechanics + less wasted energy = faster paces feeling easier.

3) I stopped skipping breakfast before early runs.
I hated eating before an early run, because it made me feel heavy and sluggish! But running fasted also meant I was going into some of my workouts with limited readily available fuel. I started experimenting with smaller, carb-focused foods that were easier to digest like bananas, oatmeal, bagels, etc!

4) I kept showing up.
There wasn’t one workout that suddenly took me from 7:03 to 6:30 pace. It was months of stacking ordinary days…easy runs, workouts, lifts, recovery, and even the sessions where I didn’t feel my best. Fitness is built through repetition.

For my 16th birthday, my only ask was for my parents to let me relax my hair. Seeing my frustration and watching me struggle every morning trying to manage my curls, almost made my mom give in. But she decided against it and stood firm with her decision.

At the time, I couldn’t understand why. I just wanted my hair to be “easier” and more manageable like the other girls at school.

Now I’m extremely grateful my mom said no. It took years of trial and error, learning what products worked for me, and unlearning the idea that straighter meant prettier. What I saw as something I needed to change was actually something I just needed time to understand.

I asked Sydney Levrone a question she said she has NEVER been asked before‼️🤯

“Did your training as an 8x Olympic gold medalist increase your pain tolerance and carry over when giving birth?”

Her response surprised me!

She said the pain and discomfort you experience during an intense workout was different from what she experienced during labor. She approached it like repeats in a workout! Instead of thinking about the entire labor at once, each contraction becomes its own rep…get through this one, recover during the rest period, then prepare for the next. As labor progresses, the “reps” get more intense and the recovery gets shorter, similar to a hard interval session.

Thank you so much for hosting such an amazing night for us to share with you Sydney Levrone New Balance 🥹💕

Stop eating like food is the enemy of your performance.

Running burns through your glycogen stores, lifting breaks down muscle so it can rebuild stronger, and when you’re doing both, your body’s calorie and fueling needs to increase significantly.
