The Poway Community Foundation hosted its first Brews & Boots Festival on Aug. 17 to raise money that can be awarded to nonprofit organizations. The event at Old Poway Park featured locally produced beer and wine, barbecue, live music and train rides in the park.

Fundraising for local cancer research has been a meaningful journey for the Johnson family of Poway. The family formed Hometown Heroes of Poway in January so they could participate in various fundraisers. So far, they’ve raised $16,579 for cancer research with a focus on healing from their own experiences with cancer.

Family member Alexis Johnson Doll, now 32, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma when she was 15.
