💭 What if the version of you that you’ve been hiding is the one people actually need to meet?

So many of us have spent years learning how to make ourselves easier to be around. Fitting into boxes, making ourselves palatable, and translating ourselves into whatever version would fit the rooms we walked into.

When we do that, we lose a little part of ourselves. And we later realize that we are not actually being known for who we really are.

I’ve been reflecting on belonging. We’ve been taught that fitting in is belonging. But that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Belonging comes from being fully seen and understood, then being chosen anyway.

It comes from baring parts of ourselves and trusting that the right people will recognize themselves in what we share.

That is what storytelling does. It lifts the veil. It creates a crack in the door and welcomes people into our world. And in doing so, it gives others permission to crack open their own doors too.

Vulnerability is a language we all understand. And while it may be uncomfortable, it is the only thing that closes the distance between us. The teller’s vulnerability becomes the listener’s permission.

Our stories are made to connect us. And it doesn’t have to start online. It can start by pouring your story onto your own journal pages. It can start by sharing something personal in a room full of strangers. It can start anywhere you decide the real version of you is worth showing up for.

It starts when we give ourselves permission to show up as exactly who we are. And that doesn’t come from hiding.

Whether you are a creative, an artist, or a human who is tired of being unseen—tell your story. Be vulnerable. Not perfectly. Not all at once. Just enough to let someone in.

Because the world doesn’t need a polished version of you. It needs the real you.

Being intentional with what we post online should be the standard, but that’s not the case because the algorithm favors brain rot, trends, and short fast-paced content designed to keep us scrolling. 🤳

And when that happens, we perform a version of ourselves that tries to fit in the box of this algorithm that is constantly changing, and most of the time it doesn’t even work.

Because social media was never meant to be a performance. At its best it’s a place to tell your story. To find your people. To show up as exactly who you are and let the right ones find you.

When we are rooted in our story—our values, our purpose, the community we’re building—we shift from performance to presence. We get to stop asking “what should I post today?” and start asking “what do I actually want to say?”

That’s when presence becomes powerful. Not because you cracked the algorithm. But because people can feel that you mean it.

So that idea you have, that story you have deeply imbedded within you? Let it be the thing you share. đź’—

I’ve been sitting with this reflection. 🌿

Storytelling is how we make sense of being human. It is how we grieve, how we heal, and how we keep alive the ones we have lost.

Losing Amin Abdulla, a security guard at the San Diego Islamic Center who lost his life protecting the people in his care, hit close to home. And it reminded me of something I keep coming back to.

Storytelling is how we keep people alive. When we say someone’s name, when we share what they stood for, when we refuse to let their story disappear, they stay with us. They stay in the world.

Now more than ever we must hold each other close. And remember that our stories, whether our own or those within our communities, deserve to be held and witnessed too.

Because stories are still how we find each other. They are how we say I see you. I am with you. When words fail, stories find us. Stories are how we hold each other through it.

Keep telling your stories. Keep honoring the ones who can no longer tell theirs. 🤍
