Hello current City College Students. I hope you enjoyed your break and are ready to get back to work. Newscene is under enrolled again so if you are returning you will need to add RTVF249. Please contact Acedo Chris for an add code. Also if you have friends that might be interested in studio production, on-camera talent, or editorial positions have them add RTVF145. We have a lot of interesting changes to share and hope you will be part of it all.

Professor Laura Castañeda is the editorial advisor for San Diego City College’s Newscene, a 30-minute weekly newscast produced by students. After this semester, she is leaving City College and the department that she has dedicated her life and career to for nearly two decades.
My dear Newsceners past and present.. This is my last Newscene class at San Diego City College. I will be retiring from City College in December. All of you are the reason I have stayed this long.. 17 years in fact. I began co-teaching this class with Kerry Teeple in 2000. I have witnessed you grow up. I'm now watching you become working professionals, mothers, fathers, and overcome other challenges and victories in life. Thank you for the honor and privilege of allowing me to pass on my knowledge over these past two decades. I hope it served you well. I will never forget you. You have changed my life in a profound way. I never set out to teach. It just happened, thanks to my mentor Hope Shaw (pictured below before her death in 2005.)I have so many photos and videos of all of you and I will cherish them and all the projects you have created over the years. What am I going to do with my life and career?? Lots. I won't be slowing down anytime soon. I am working on a screenplay, a book, my business, Press Pass International Talent Management and then there's my real children and husband! I've put them aside for you so many times, now it's their turn. I will have more announcements in the months to come, but I just wanted to let you know now. I don't know about the future of "Newscene", or the RTVF department, it's in Chris Acedo and Cy Kuckenbaker's hands now. We will be making the transition in the next few weeks. I won't be posting as often here anymore but most of you know how to find me. Thanks to all our wonderful tutors and instructors.
Please always keep Cory Dalton, Carmel Musgrove, and LaShawn Encarnacion in your thoughts and prayers. There is a memorial wall for them, the newsceners we've lost along the way. Vaya con Dios. Profe Laura Castañeda
I have a student working on a midterm project. They need to interview TV producers. If you are a producer in TV please contact Diana Torregiani for her interview at [email protected]

In light of the recent suicides (Kate Spade and now Anthony Bordain) I thought I would share this article with you. I've always been taught and taught you, that media does not cover suicides unless it's a very well known person or unusual circumstance. Even that is changing it seems. The second part of my message is this.. each of us knows someone who is depressed, suffers from anxiety or just needs to vent sometimes. Perhaps there is another movement about to happen, and that is probably a good thing, but it's horribly sad that it's taken celebrity lives to bring it to light.
Suicide made headlines several times this week. How can journalists, celebrities and anyone who might make a post on social media embrace some best

Why would anyone want to go to the Beyonce show this evening when we've got Attorney Art Neill on campus to give a talk on Law for Media Makers? 90 minutes with this guy and you'll know more about copyright than 99% of Americans. And that matters if you're publishing your work on the web. TRUST me.
