Our Overland Life

Our Overland Life Husband and Wife Photo duo lived life full time on the road, traveling the USA and Canada. Our main mode of travel is our Toyota Tundra truck. Why the Tundra?

Back to work and occasional travel as we reset for what's next, OnX Trail guides and Full time marketing team. We are Brett & Liz, Husband and wife who decided to implement a 5 year plan. Get out of debt, save money, and travel until the funds run out, or until we can find something to do that will maintain a travel lifestyle. Five years later Feb 1st 2019 our renters moved into our house and th

e full time journey begun. Because its relabel, capable, and incredibly comfortable. The only downside, it gets horrible fuel economy. We also occasionally bring along Liz’s regular cab Toyota Tacoma. It serves a few purposes. First and foremost when the trail gets difficult she prefers to be behind the wheel of her own truck. I mean who wants to be a passenger anyway when the road gets fun. The other benefit is, when you live and travel together full time, sometimes you want to listen to your own music, your own podcasts and your own audio books. Were connect by radio for pointing out interesting things we see along the road, but its nice to break up the driving days sometimes with the separate trucks. Plus the dogs like the extra space to spread out. Oh yeah, we have three pups with us as well, because were crazy, but we love having a little pack with us. So for now here we are, traveling, exploring, camping, overlanding and adventuring. Thanks for following along, for now our post are fewer and far in between, someday we hope to slow down a little and really start putting content together to share, but for now, were trying to enjoy every day like its our last and focusing on making someday today.

Winter desert camping. It can still be super cold, it can be very windy, but the stars seem brighter and crisper, the nights are epic, and in our opinion, it’s the best time of year to explore the desert. Add in an existing campfire ring, and it’s a double win. This one even had a grilling grate built-in. If only I had brought steaks. The Moto is STILL DOWN! We have been waiting on parts for weeks now; the valves were shot and were waiting for a gadget to come in, and we’re headed back out. We can’t wait. February is a busy month. Let’s get this rolling!

Coffee: it’s a morning ritual and has been a must for us. We prefer to have pour-over vs. French press because cleanup tends to be so much easier. But on the rare occasion I feel like taking the time; we typically travel with an espresso maker and a milk frother to make cappuccinos. These days though, pour-over seems to be the solid winner. Then our buddies over at VSSL developed their coffee grinder, and the game changed even more. No more need to grind at the store; now we can grind for whatever we’re making that day. This thing is fantastic. Compact, lightweight, adjustable for everything from pouring over, to espresso, French press, and everything in between. This little coffee kit of ours is ever-expanding, and the Step22 stingray bag is the perfect home for it all. What’s your go-to camp coffee? Do you make fancy coffee or heat some water and go instant. I don’t think there is ever a wrong answer. You only need a great spot to enjoy it.

Liz is off with her girlfriends this weekend for another fun adventure. I know she’s stoked to be back in Lil trucks saddle again and not riding copilot.
We just got her back from Mike over for part 1 of 2 front-end maintenance. Her steering rack was shot, and there were a few other things to address. Also, she will be going back to get new lower control arms and maybe rebuild the upper UCA’s. We suspect this may be a delayed repair from that one time we had a blast on the salt flats or just the fact that the truck has about 145k miles on her. It was time, and we are whipping her back into shape for the many more miles of adventure she’s got ahead. In the meantime! Girls trip! Have fun

The last night camping with friends after a multi day trip is always bitter sweet. There are tons of laughs and great adventures ahead but you always seem to end up a little misty that it’s over. At least for now. But the good news is there are more adventures on the horizon. More time to be goofy together and experience new things and new places. Onward and upward.

From here I embark solo and log some serious miles on dirt on the Moto. It’s like I’m training for something but I don’t know what. I guess I’m just having a blast!

Rolled in after dark!
Again.
We made it, holidays over, family enjoyed. Projects! Doneish!
But we are back out here and the illumination is kicking. We’re linking up with our friends tomorrow and deciding where to stake our claim.
Where there are: muddy, people, windy
Where we are: sandy, no mud, people, windy.
Might be time to move camp and carve out our own little slice of paradise. But for now. Whisky and bedtime!

Hers and hers, is that a thing? LOL. If you have been following along on our stories, then you have mostly noticed we’re running two Motos these days. Officially they are both Lizzies, but we decided the 250 we had initially picked up for her was a little heavy for her to get hit dirt legs with. (Coming in around 300lbs) So we decided to pick up a 140, and she’s been improving exponentially with it. Being under 200lbs makes it easier for her to pick up when she goes over. And she’s been dropping it seldom now. Eventually, she will get back on the 250, but for now, I get to enjoy it as we ride together. I hadn’t ridden a dirtbike in about 20 years, so I’m trying to take it easy as well. It’s a good combination of power and lightweight for me, and I look forward to the adventures we have ahead. In the meantime, it’s just been fun to get more and more places together and see so much more country as we explore. We can’t wait for New Years to meet up with some more of our friends and go for a rip!

Sunsets and base camps. We are trying to be better about not moving every day. So now, with the addition of the Motos, we have been able to “sit still” a little better. And by sitting still, we mean riding for 3-5 hours a day and staying in the same camping spot for more than a night or two. The Motos are for sure adding a new level of exploration to our travels, and it’s been fantastic to dive deeper into the areas we travel to. Who knows, maybe once Lizzy graduates to the 250, I can get a bigger bike, and we will start trying a few overnighters with just the bikes. 🤔 time will tell, but for now. Base with the van and explore with the bikes.
