Back in June, I took a leap of faith and launched EmpowerConnect Services—a platform built with purpose, passion, and lived experience. This journey has been filled with highs, lows, lessons, and growth. And through it all, one thing has remained constant: community.

From the incredible partnerships and connections to the moments of clarity and courage, I’m beyond grateful. You’ve helped me bring this vision to life—and I couldn’t have done it without you.

Risk Busters! A new health and safety series designed to share practical tips, trusted resources and important information to help keep our community healthy and informed. September’s topic: Choking. Individuals with developmental disabilities face risks for choking and aspiration.

Common signs someone is choking:
- Hands around neck/throat
- Inability to talk
- Coughing, wheezing, or other unusual breathing sounds
- Change in color (face/lips blue or red)
- Passing out

Definitions of choking and aspiration per DDS Health Toolkit:
- Choking happens when something blocks a person’s airway. This can be caused by food, liquids, bead, a toy, or other small objects.
- Aspiration happens when these small objects are breathed into the lungs. This may happen during choking.
- Aspiration can be silent—it may not seem that a person is choking.
- Aspiration can lead to pneumonia from bacteria or substances that a person breathed into their lungs.

Foods that can often lead to choking:

- Hot dogs
- Meat
- Pizza
- Spaghetti
- Melon
- Sandwiches
- Cake
- Doughnuts
- Nuts
- Hard candies
- Raw vegetables
- Corn
- Popcorn
- Grapes
- Beans
- Crackers
- Peanut butter
- French fries

This month is all about childhood cancer awareness month and I can’t even imagine to think about the journey that a child has to go through having cancer. It always hard but in the journey its full of hope and strength.

As we know the word CANCER Is a strong word for most and can be the most difficult word to swallow especially as a child as it is a journey to learn and navigate through the process and sit with the hard times and laugh with the good times.

Every child is never fighting alone with their fight with cancer we are fighting together.

There’s always hope beyond what you see.” “It’s possible not just to survive, but to thrive and to live a healthy, wonderful life again
