I got to do something really exciting this week. I was interviewed by Marie Coronel 10News at 10News – ABC San Diego KGTV, and we talked about something I care deeply about: why waiting until a crisis hits is the most expensive decision a family can make.

I met Maryann Stroh at Paradise Village Retirement Community here in San Diego, and honestly, people like her are exactly why I wrote my book, While You Still Have Time. She planned ahead. She made her wishes known. And because of that, her family isn't guessing, scrambling, or fighting over decisions in a hospital hallway.

Not every family is that lucky. I've seen both sides, and the difference is heartbreaking.
This book is for anyone who loves someone who is aging. That's most of us.

If you've been meaning to have "that conversation" with your parents, or with your own kids, this is your nudge. It doesn't have to be hard. It just has to happen.

Thankful to JoAnn Fields for helping set this up and creating awareness of the importance of seniors and their families to be proactive.

The bathroom is the #1 place seniors fall.

2am. Wet floor. Half asleep. Rushing.

It's not the stairs. It's not the garage. It's the bathroom.

Quick fixes to help prevent falls:
βœ“ Motion sensor nightlight
βœ“ Clear path (nothing to trip on)
βœ“ Grab bars by toilet
βœ“ No rushing

Here's a tip that could save you $30,000:

Install a $30 grab bar.

The average hip surgery? $30,000+
Plus rehab. Plus recovery. Plus lost independence.

A grab bar by the toilet or in the shower? About $30.
I know what you're thinking. "Those are for old people." Or "It'll make my house look like a hospital."

I've heard it before. I sat with a family who said the same thing about their dad.

Now he's in a hospital.

Here's the truth: a grab bar isn't about getting old. It's about staying in control. It's about keeping your independence longer.
Every hotel you've ever stayed in has grab bars in the bathroom. Every gym. Every public building. It's not a sign of weakness. It's just smart.

Prevention isn't expensive. Crisis is.

This is Level 1 of The Senior Thriving Frameworkβ„’. Safety first.
Everything else builds from here.

Safety planning isn't giving up.

It's an act of love.

For yourself. For your family. For your future.

I know these conversations can be hard. Grab bars. Medical alerts. Home safety checks. It can feel like people are saying you can't take care of yourself anymore.

But that's not what it is.

It's your family saying: I want you here. I want you safe. I want you to have choices.

And it's you saying: I'm planning ahead so I stay in control.

That's not giving up. That's wisdom.

I put together a video that walks through how to make your home safer, room by room, along with the real costs of aging in place and how to get the support you need.

They Built a Restaurant. They Raised a Family. They Never Learned How to Plan for This.

My parents, Sonny and Rose, came to this country with nothing but faith and hard work.

They built one of San Diego's first Filipino restaurants. They worked six, sometimes seven days a week. They raised five kids. They put food on the table, paid the bills, and gave us every opportunity they could.

But nobody taught them how to plan for what comes next. Nobody sat them down and said, "Here's what you need to think about as you get older. Here's how to protect what you've built." Nobody told them about powers of attorney. Nobody explained what care actually costs. Nobody gave them a roadmap.

They weren't alone. An entire generation worked hard, saved what they could, and assumed things would just work out.

For many, it didn't just work out.

Today, my parents live with me. Mom has Parkinson's. She's in her mid-70s, and she's still showing up every single day. Dad is finally opening up about planning. It took years. But we're doing it together.

That's why I do this work.

For my parents. For yours. For everyone who worked hard their whole lives and deserves better than figuring it out in crisis mode.

"Honor your father and mother." β€” Ephesians 6:2
That's my why.

Did your parents have a plan? Or were they the "figure it out as we
go" generation?

Share this with someone whose parents gave everything and deserve peace in this season.

There's SO much information out there about aging.
Safety. Health. Housing. Legal stuff. Finances. Family conversations.

It's a lot. And if you're feeling overwhelmed, you're not alone.

I've sat with many seniors who felt the exact same way. I've watched my own parents try to figure it out. Everyone wants to do the right thing.
No one knows where to start.

That's why I created a simple roadmap. Something to cut through the noise and give you clarity.

I call it The Senior Thriving Frameworkβ„’.

Three levels. The order matters.

Level 1: Safety & Support (Foundation)
πŸ”· ️Is your home safe?
πŸ”· Do you have people you can count on?
πŸ”· Are your important papers in order?

Level 2: Belonging & Connection (Heart)
πŸ”· Are you connected to people who matter?
πŸ”· Do you feel seen and valued?

Level 3: Purpose & Fulfillment (Soul)
πŸ”· Do you have meaning in this season?
πŸ”· Are you living with intention?

Here's the thing: you can't skip levels. We build from the bottom up.

You're not behind. You're not too late. You're starting exactly where you need to.

I'm putting everything I've learned into a book coming this spring. Follow along to be the first to know when it's out.

Which level do you need to work on most? Drop a 1, 2, or 3 in the comments.
