From Blackbeard to Netflix: Pirates in Modern Media features an incredible panel with:

⚓ Dr. Rebecca Simon (pirate historian)

⚓ Zach McGowan (Black Sails)
⚓ Lukas Ettlin (Black Sails & One Piece)
⚓ Moderated by yours truly.

We explore pirate history, the myths behind the legends, Black Sails, One Piece, Pirates of the Caribbean, and why pirates continue to capture our imaginations more than 300 years after the Golden Age of Piracy.

A huge thank you to my outstanding panelists, the Comic-Con Programming Team, and the enthusiastic audience for making it such a memorable experience.

Today in Pirate History -
🌎 June 7, 1692 – The Day Port Royal Sank
For a brief moment in history, there was no richer, wilder, or more notorious pirate city on Earth than Port Royal, Jamaica.

And then...
In a matter of minutes...
Much of it vanished beneath the sea.

🏴‍☠️ The Wickedest City in the World
During the late 1600s, Port Royal was the beating heart of Caribbean piracy.

Its waterfront was packed with:

⚓ Privateers
⚓ Merchants
⚓ Treasure hunters
⚓ Pirates fresh from a successful voyage

The city became famous for its:

🍺 Taverns
🎲 Gambling houses
💰 Treasure wealth
🏴‍☠️ Pirate captains spending fortunes as fast as they earned them

Some contemporaries called it: “The Wickedest City in the World”

⚔️ The Earth Begins to Shake
At approximately 11:43 in the morning on June 7, 1692, the ground suddenly lurched beneath the city.

Buildings began to sway, church bells rang wildly, then the earth split open.

Witnesses reported streets collapsing as the sandy soil beneath Port Royal liquefied.

Entire buildings sank, people disappeared, ships were tossed onto the shore, others were pulled out to sea.

🌊 The Sea Takes the City
Within minutes, nearly two-thirds of Port Royal had fallen into the harbor.

Homes, warehouses, taverns, treasure,
Gone.
Thousands died in the disaster and its aftermath.

What had been one of the wealthiest ports in the New World became one of history’s most famous sunken cities.

💰 Treasure Lost Forever?
The sinking of Port Royal created one of history’s greatest accidental treasure vaults.

Coins, jewelry, weapons, everyday objects.
All preserved beneath the harbor mud.

Modern archaeologists still study the underwater ruins today, offering one of the clearest windows into life during the Golden Age of Piracy.

⚓ Pirate Republic Take
Many believed the earthquake was divine punishment.

A judgment upon a city that had become synonymous with excess, vice, and piracy.

Whether that’s true or not...
The timing was remarkable.
One moment Port Royal ruled the Caribbean.
The next...
The sea reclaimed it.

🏴‍☠️ In the end-
Pirates feared the Royal Navy.

They feared hurricanes.
They feared the gallows.
But on June 7, 1692, they learned there was something even more powerful.

The sea itself.
